Raymond received a Bachelor's of Science in Electrical Engineering from Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts in 1970. His steady judgment and practical wisdom guided a life marked by diligent work, service, and a willingness to pursue new horizons.
Raymond was a veteran, having served in the United States Army National Guard and Reserves for thirteen years where he was promoted to the rank of Captain. He was formerly Assistant Director of Electrical Utilities for the City of Statesville. He was also a former employee of Celanese Corp. and Sackner Corp and retired from William T. Burnett Co. in 2011. In addition, he was the former owner and manager of R & R Services in Statesville, North Carolina—work that reflected both his strong work ethic and his commitment to the community he called home.
Raymond was married to his wife Robbin for 42 years.
In his personal life, Raymond’s curiosity and sense of adventure found many outlets. He served as former President of the Statesville Community Theatre. He became a licensed private pilot in 1995. He authored 11 novels and a memoir. He also built a 3-story house on Broad Street in Statesville with his own two hands, a lasting testament to his skill, perseverance, and hands-on determination.
He is survived by his wife, Robbin Jean Setzer Spengler of Statesville; his son, Christopher Setzer Spengler of Statesville; his daughter, Mary Jennifer Spengler of Charlotte; his brother, Albert A. Spengler (Liz) of Merritt Island, Florida; his brother, Paul T. Spengler (Analyn) of Ozamiz, Northern Mindanao, Philippines; his sister-in-law, Cynthia Spengler; his brother-in-law, David Kolsch; his grandson, Ethan McNeely (Raven) of New Ulm, Minnesota; and numerous nieces and nephews survive Mr. Spengler. He was preceded in death by his father, Albert Karl Spengler; his mother, Helen Gertrude Lagberg Spengler; his brother, Lawrence Spengler; and his sister, Mary Ellen Kolsch.
The family will have a receiving of friends at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home in Statesville on May 1, 2026, from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. A memorial service will follow in The Chapel at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home on May 1, 2026, at 7:00 pm with Pastor Bill Troutman officiating.
