

Richard A. Phillips, 55 years old of Statesville passed away at his home on February 25, 2016. Born in Stafford Springs, CT, Richard has been a resident of Iredell County for 42 years. Richard was a partner with the law firm of Benbow & Phillips Attorneys in Statesville. He was a 1978 graduate of North Iredell High School. He graduated in 1982 from the University of North Carolina with a double major in political science and economics. While at Carolina, he was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa honorary society. Richard graduated from the University of North Carolina School of Law in 1985. He served as an assistant district attorney for the 22nd Judical District and practiced law in Statesville for the past 30 + years. He was a member of Statesville Masonic Lodge 27.
Richard was predeceased by his parents, Rudolph and Mary Phillips; his father-in-law, Charles Ray Best, Sr. and his brother-in-law, Hector Hamel. Richard is survived by his wife of 14 years ,whom he loved dearly, Doris Marie (Best) Phillips; his mother-in-law, Doris P. Best of Statesville; his brother, Rudolph Phillips, Jr. and his wife Pauline of Stafford Springs, CT; his sisters, Sandra Lloyd and her husband Elmer of Tolland, CT, Pat Phillips of Statesville and Jan Hamel of Statesville; his brothers-in-law, Charles Ray Best Jr. of Statesville, James Michael Best and his wife Cindy of Statesville and Timothy Best and his wife Angela of Statesville; his sisters-in-law, Brenda Kay Best of Statesville, Nancy B. Murdock and her husband Dennis of Troutman and Beverly B. Boger and her husband Robert of Troutman and his 21 nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday February 28, 2016 from 2-6pm. A funeral service will be held on Monday 11am in the Westmoreland Chapel at the funeral home with the burial to follow in Oakwood Cemetery, Statesville.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Masonic Home for Children, 600 College St., Oxford, NC 27565 in Richard’s memory.
