

Shirley Mae (Brantley) Mayfield, 84, passed away on Monday, May 29, 2023, in Statesville, N.C. She was born on August 27, 1938, in Orangeburg, S.C., to the late Isaac Brantley, Sr. and Eloise Brantley.
In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Milton Lee Mayfield, Sr.; her brothers, Mr. L.D. Brantley, Mr. Isaac Brantley Jr., Mr. Willie Brantley, and Mr. Samuel Brantley; and her sisters, Mrs. Bertha Stanley, Mrs. Ruby Mae Taylor, Mrs. Daisy Bell Williams, Mrs. Helen Brantley Martian, and Mrs. Lois Wilson.
Shirley is survived by her children, Milton Darnell Mayfield, Rev. Shelia Mayfield Williams, and Jermaine Lamont Mayfield; her grandchildren, Asia S. Dalton, Oreon Y. Mayfield, Sr., and Akeem R. Robertson; her great-grandchildren, Oreon Y. Mayfield, Jr., Carmon Mayfield, Akeem R. Robertson, Ava L. Robertson, and Diva; her brother, Nathaniel Brantley (Maudie) of Dix Hall, N.Y.; her sister, Barbara Ravenel of New York City, N.Y.; sister in laws, Mary Mayfield, Elizabeth Jackson, Sherry Mayfield; brother in law, Clifford Mayfield, and many nieces and nephews.
She graduated with honors, and sang at Commencement. Shirley was employed by The Mosteller’s, in Hickory, N.C., as a Housekeeper for 25 years. After retiring, Shirley went back to work for the Iredell Vocational Workshop, in Troutman, N.C.
She was a member of Holsey Memorial CME Church, in Statesville, N.C., where she served on several different boards. She served as the Holsey Memorial CME Church Missionary President and also as the Northern Zones Missionary President of the Winston-Salem/Greenville District. She worked with the Stewardess Ministry, the Trustee Ministry, the Laity Ministry Cooking Committee, and the Pastor Aide Committee.
Shirley was on the Board of Christian Education, and served as the Children’s Ministry Director. She advised children’s Sunday school teachers and was a special advisor, and coordinator, for many different children’s special events and programs.
Shirley sang with many choirs, such as the Voices of Holsey, the Senior Choir, the Fellowship Choir, and the Fourth Sunday Conventions Choir, under leadership of Jimmy Roseboro.
In 1989, she was one of the original Mitchell Community College Choir members, under the leadership of Mr. Freddie Morrison. She also served as the choir’s president and treasurer.
She travelled to many different countries to sing and to minister about the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Shirley enjoyed flower arranging and growing different types of flowers. She ran a part-time flower arrangement business, named “Shirley’s Creations”, out of her home. She was especially passionate about arranging flowers for her church’s edifices, and growing and maintaining flowers, and trees, for the landscaping.
Visitation and funeral services will be held for Mrs. Mayfield on Friday, June 9, 2023, at Holsey Memorial CME Church. Visitation will be held from 12:30 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Belmont Cemetery. Repass will be held after burial at West Iredell Ruritan, 133 Warrior Drive, Statesville, N.C.
