Dorothy Pierce Hitchings

Dorothy Pierce Hitchings, 90, died Saturday, April 30, 2011 at the residence of her daughter.

She was born July 2, 1920 in Connecticut, the daughter of the late Harold N. and Dorothy Eiby Pierce.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Selwyn Hitchings in 1979.

Survivors include her daughter, Karen Hitchings of Staunton, a son, Kenneth Hitchings of Culpeper, a sister, Betty Piorkowski of Staunton, three grandchildren, Michael, Ashley and Courtney Hitchings.

She served during World War ll in the Army Nursing Corp while stationed in England.

She retired as director of nursing from the former Kings Daughters Hospital in Staunton and was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Staunton.

A graveside service will be held 1:00 PM Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at Thornrose Cemetery by the Rev. Shelby Ochs Owen.

Military rites will be provided by American Legion Post 340.

The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 PM this evening (May 3, 2011) at the Staunton Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, 214 W. Beverly St., Staunton, Va., 24401 or Hospice of the Shenandoah, P O Box 215 Fishersville, Va., 22939.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Staunton Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes.
