Born and raised in Staunton, Harry spent his entire life in the place he called home, becoming a familiar and steady presence in the community.
He was the son of Mary Doyle Shiflett and Harry M. Shiflett, and the brother of Jimmy Shiflett. He was preceded in death by his wife, Susan Croyl Shiflett, who passed away in 2016.
Harry was a devoted husband and a wonderful father, roles he carried with quiet strength and deep care.
He was the owner of The Dragon’s Hoard, but to many, it was never just a store. It was a meeting place, a refuge, and a starting point for countless adventures. Through it, Harry became a father figure to generations of gamers—offering guidance, conversation, and a place where people felt they belonged.
He had a deep love of reading, especially science fiction and fantasy, and a lifelong appreciation for imagination in all its forms. Those worlds weren’t just stories to him—they were something to be shared, explored, and passed on to others.
He is survived by his daughter, Rebecca Shiflett, along with family, friends, and a wide community who will remember him through the stories told, the games played, and the space he created for others.
Harry will be cremated in accordance with his wishes. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes of Staunton.
