Mary Artis Danner Dennis was my beloved 4th grade teacher at Thomas Jefferson Grammar School in 1950 and a close personal family friends for the last 60+ years. We were very blessed to have her in our lives. John and Mary Jane Ridgway Ditzler

Mary Artis Danner Dennis was my third grade teacher, as well as a neighbor, who was good friends with my parents, Mildred and Holmes Yeakley. She was so thoughtful to attend their funerals, and for me to visit with,her. I was a classmate with Rick Dennis, and I send my condolences to him and his family. I will always remember her as my favorite teacher.

When we learned of Mary Artis' passing, I was grieved that a hoped for visit would not be possible. The Churchmans and Mary Artis were always very close. The Danner and Churchman families attended the same church, Tinkling Spring Presbyterian. I remember looking forward to my first communion, when I would get to taste Mrs. Danner's homemade wine. Even though my mother did not permit alcohol in the house, I reasoned that Christ had turned water into wine and not grape juice.
Mary Artis, way back in the 30's drove my sisters and me into Staunton to attend the Staunton public schools. I remember my mother driving us to the Danner lane about three miles from our farm to meet Mary Artis in her blue Plymouth, in which she taught me how to drive. Sometimes I worked in the summers on the Danner farm and also enjoyed borrowing their pony and cart to travel back and forth.
Mary Artis was always such a delightful and joyful person and so young at heart, as well as body. I remember once at Virginia Beach, when she was with us, we were convinced that the man at the booth who maintained he could guess anybody's age surely could not know that she was so much older than she appeared. I learned from this experience that one determines age by looking into the eyes, and so he was not fooled.
I was always amazed that Mary Artis could live alone in her Staunton house and care for herself, even drive for a long time, but in later years she was so fortunate to have her niece Nancy Wright to live with her and look after her.
We will always remember Mary Artis and her good cheer and wonderful smile.

Mes. Dennis was my 3rd grade teacher, probably around 1968 ... and was always one of my favorites.  Over the years I remained the Staunton area and would often see her around town and every single time, she remembered me by name.  Even the last time I saw her, several years ago, her eye site was failing but she recognized my voice when I spoke to her.  She was the sweetest woman and there will be an empty spot for many people where she stood in their lives .... I know I will miss her smile ...

Miss Danner, as I knew her, was my 3rd grade teacher over 56 years ago, and  I never forgot her.  I was actually able to see her and have a brief chat about two years ago while she was getting her hair done at the same salon where my mother goes.  I became a teacher and taught 38 years.  There were many times, during my teaching career, that I remembered what a kind and wonderful teacher she was.
