I met Dinny in the early 90’s when my mom Jacqueline Heaslip and Dinny became acquainted through BSSS and Co-Art. I enjoyed Dinny’s company greatly and she was such a talented artist. Her spirit and soul will live on in her artwork. I had the pleasure of enjoying her company as a fellow sketcher this past winter when Sketch Staunton met at the Blackburn Inn and Crucible Coffee. She was so happy to hang out and do her thing.🥰

I knew Deaney for many years .She was so enthusiastic and insightful about my paintings and I always learned from her .She was a wonderful painter ,though she would never say so herself.I truly appreciated her openheartedness and her kindness and her sense of fun .She was a true artist and a delightful person .I will miss her very much .

I met Dinny shortly after I moved to Staunton in 1977. We have gone to art shows together for many years and shared many meals and laughter. We are in CoART together and spent many hours talking about our lives. While she was still working for Leggetts, Dinny, Mary and I had life drawing sessions at the large room in Mary Baldwin’s art building. There are many great memories and she will be missed.

I met “Dinny” through my friendship with Mary Echols when I was an art professor at Mary Baldwin College (as it was known then). She participated in a number of workshops that I lead for the Beverley Street Studio School, and faithfully attended all art shows in town. Always self effacing, “Dinny” was a gifted artist, with a talent and sensibility she disparaged in words but expressed with vigorous independence and skill when drawing or painting. She also had a wry sense of humor, often self mocking, as well as a generous, inclusive spirit that delighted others. She’ll be greatly missed among her friends and fellow artists.

As a former member of Co Art Gallery, I always received kind, friendly greetings and support from Dinny.  She was always upbeat, bright, and smiling.  What a wonderful person and artist she was.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Dabney Deane, Jr.; and her sister, Joan Sands.


Survivors include her three children, Jennifer Sands Deane of Staunton, Virginia Deane Bushman and husband, Scott of Fredericksburg, VA, and Thomas H. Deane and wife, Lizneth of Fayetteville, NC; and two granddaughters, Erin Sarver and husband, Steven, and Anna Deane.
