Rosario Hortensia Perez Blanco Hidalgo was born in Holguin, Oriente, Cuba on June 20, 1929. She was the second born child of Dr. Antonio Perez Zorilla De San Martin and Hortensia Blanco Martinez. Rosario was married to Fermin Pompello Hidalgo in Holguin, Oriente, Cuba on September 18, 1955. Fermin was born on April 10, 1925. Rosario’s parents were very fond of Fermin from the moment they met him. Fermin and Rosario had two children, Lillian M. Hidalgo and Hortensia M. Smekal. They later had three grandchildren Eric W. Kobesak, Jacqueline R. Kobesak and Victor A. Smekal. Fermin and Rosario left Cuba in 1966 with their family to head to the United States. The Hidalgo family stayed in Spain for 3 months and later moved to Chicago on December 23, 1966. They live in the Logan Square area until 1973, when they moved to the south side of the city.
Rosario was very proud of her family history. She always shared stories of her life growing up in Cuba. She was very blessed in her upbringing yet was never impressed by status but rather the character of a person. Rosario appreciated elegance but was satisfied by simplicity. Rosario always had a deep appreciation for the arts. She grew up dancing ballet and took great pride in seeing her granddaughter also study ballet. She also had a lifelong passion for playing the piano. Rosario was an extremely adventurous, resourceful and intelligent woman. She studied and taught accounting at a post secondary school in Cuba. Rosario had a much better memory than her daughters and grandchildren. She often expressed her concern for their lack of memory and rightly so. Rosario was a woman of deep faith. She had very high standards for herself but never imposed her beliefs upon others. She accepted people for who they were and enjoyed sharing knowledge and life experiences with everyone around her. Rosario was very confident and never was overly concerned with judgment.
Rosario had a great love for her two daughters and had a very unique relationship with her grandchildren. Even as children she always respected them and their opinions. Rosario did not play the traditional grandmother role, but rather she was a best friend and played an irreplaceable part in their lives. She was everyone’s “abuela” because of the way she was able to relate to the young and accept their lifestyles. She had an amazing sense of humor and was always capable of a witty response. Rosario loved to be around her family but also loved her independence. She really enjoyed cooking and took pleasure in making delicious meals for her family. Rosario was extremely health conscious. While she exercised for the health benefits she truly enjoyed eating healthy and working out. Rosario was very content and very grateful for all the good things in her life. Spending time with her family was truly what brought her the most happiness. Rosario was fun, energetic and always full of life. Most would say she was a tough little cookie. We all will miss her dearly and she will live forever in our hearts. There will never be a day in our lives when we will not think about her.
