Carl Norval Brooking

Carl Norval Brooking, 88, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends at his home on Saturday, December 16, 2017. Carl was born in Boise, Idaho to Russell Anderson Brooking and Luella Mae Evans (Brooking). He was the youngest of 8 children and the last surviving child of his parents. His brothers Howard, Walter, Edward, Robert, John, Leo and his sister Alice Cornog Greenberg (Brooking) all preceded him in death.

Carl was married to his beloved wife Martha Jane Wilkinson(Brooking) for 51 years. They were partners in life, love, and business. Carl was a lifelong resident of Stockton from the age of three. He graduated from Stockton High School, College of the Pacific and Cal Berkeley with a degree in Psychology. He served in the Army during the Korean conflict. He worked from the age of 14 in retail. His first job was at The Stockton Bargain Spot, which later became Rosenthal's Department Store. Upon the death of the original owner of Rosenthal's, he and Martha purchased and operated Rosenthal's until its closing in 1993. He was proud to be a lifelong retailer. He was very active in the community of Stockton and belonged to the East Stockton Kiwanis Club and later became a member of the El Dorado Kiwanis Club of Stockton. He held a number of positions including President. Carl was a member of the City of Stockton Redevelopment Commission as well as a fixture on the Weberstown West Homeowners Association board.

He is survived by his daughter Mary Black, sons Michael Brooking and Russell Brooking (Nell Varni). Grand-children Lauren Crook, Vincent Brooking, Quinn Brooking, and great-grandson Tyler Crook. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.The family would like to express its sincere appreciation to Hospice of San Joaquin for their care and making it possible for him to spend his last days at home.
