

John was born May 20, 1928 on a farm outside of Sac City, Iowa to Robert M. and Mattie A. Long. John served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War 1951-1953. John married Amber F. McLeod Sept. 19, 1950. Together they raised 7 children. Later he married Joann Lombardo on Sept. 22, 1990. John was employed by the Department of Agriculture and Soil Conservation Service for 36 years, as an engineer, in Casper Wyoming. After retiring, John moved to Stockton, CA. He enjoyed an active retirement traveling with friends and family. He could often be seen transporting his friends to doctor’s appointments and running errands. In his later years he was frequently seen with his travel companion, Rosalie Aragon and her dog, Kiko. John was an active member of the Elk’s Lodge. He held office as an Exalted Ruler 1998-1999 and also served as club accountant. He was active in his church, Zion Lutheran, in Stockton, CA as an usher. John never lost his love for the summer pass-time of baseball. He was a season ticket holder for the Stockton Ports. He was a life-long Chicago Cubs fan as well. John is survived by his 7 children: Andy Long of El Paso, TX; Patty Eshbach of Fairfax, VA and Jay Long of Ervin, NC, Amber Trausky of Laramie, WY, Rose Fry of Casper, WY, Jim Long of Stilwell, KS, and Lisa Vice of Stafford, VA 9 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and two brothers, a grandson, and his first and second wives. Memorials may be sent to the Stockton Elk’s Lodge #218, 8900 Thornton Rd.
