Juan passed in his sleep peacefully on January 6, 2026. Juan is survived by his sons: John Bilbrey, Santos Modesto and David Modesto (Joy) and their families. He has 3 siblings: Barbara Madrid (Joe), Victor Modesto, RoseMarie Benjamin, a loving niece, Angelina Carranco, nephews and grandkids. Also, by his stepchildren: Sylvia Alvarez (Efrain) and Adela Gutierrez (Sotero) and many grandchildren.
Juan is predeceased by his wife, Guadalupe Valles (Lupe) and his parents John and Louise Modesto and niece, Joann Akin.
Juan, the second oldest of 4 children, was born on May 10, 1947, in Kansas. The Modesto family moved to California in the 60’s. Juan spent his youth in French Camp. Juan enlisted in the United States Navy in 1964. He was a Veteran of the Vietnam War and proudly wore his hats indicating his service. Juan was a gunner’s mate and sharpshooter.
After completing his service, Juan settled in San Joaquin County and had several jobs: C.G. Gall (truck driver), RBI (Roto Blades, Inc. – painting helicopter blades), etc. RBI was then purchased by Bell Helicopter and then relocated to Louisiana.
Juan was given the opportunity to also relocate to Louisiana and head a department: repair, paint and balance helicopter blades. However, before he accepted this offer, he asked Lupe for her hand in marriage. Nuptials followed on July 29, 2000, and Lupe took care of her “Fat Boy” for 21 years.
Juan enjoyed a good party, dancing, Lupe’s cooking and hot chili con carne, football (Raiders) and a Bud Light with fellow Vets at the VFW.
Juan loved his family and friends. Juan will be missed by many and remembered as a man who lived his life – his way.
A memorial to be held at a later date.
