It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Carla Marjorie Irwin on Thursday, March 2nd at Westview Health Centre in Stony Plain, Alberta. She passed peacefully in her sleep with her husband Barry of 62 years at her bedside.
Carla was born to Ed and Mae Laurie October 6th 1944 in Regina, Saskatchewan. She moved to Victoria, British Columbia at an early age with her parents and lived with her grandparents Samuel and Evelyn McMaster. While in Victoria, she met and married Barry in October 1961.
Carla played many sports including softball, field hockey, curling and golf. She also had real artistic flair which she expressed through oil paintings, water colours and sketches. She won several awards for her work and many of her friends were gifted with some of her original work. Carla’s annual Christmas Art Cards were highly anticipated.
Barry and Carla liked to travel especially to the United States where they visited over 35 states. They wintered in Arizona and Carla developed many poolside friendships. They also travelled to Europe several times. However, her favorite excursion was to Africa, where she and Barry enjoyed a train trip and several safaris.
Carla and Barry made an early decision in their marriage to see as much of Canada as they could. Job transfers took them from coast to coast to coast which included Alberta (High Prairie), Northwest Territories (Yellowknife), Nova Scotia (Amherst), Ontario (Ottawa), and finally back to Alberta (Edmonton, Stony Plain). Carla had an enjoyable career with IKEA in Ottawa and Edmonton until she retired as manager of the Edmonton store in 1995.
Carla is survived by her sister Marilyn (Fred) Gorzitza, her children Doug (Diane) and Karen and grandchildren Kristen and Sean.
She will be sadly missed by her family and many friends for her love of life, humor, wit and quick sarcasm which was enjoy by all.
Rest in Peace Loved One
