Dave Brundell passed away peacefully on October 14, 2023, in Edmonton, Alberta, with his daughters, Jackie and Jenny, by his side, following a long battle with cancer.
He is survived by his children: Liz Cornish (Tony), Sue Chambers (Howard), Mick Brundell (Jo), Pete Brundell, Jenny Brundell (Tony), and Jackie Brundell (John), as well as 12 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
Born in Leicester, England, in 1935, Dave ("David" if he was in trouble) began his career at just 15 years old when he was accepted into the Royal Air Force Boy Entrants program at RAF Cosford (15/16th Entry). His service took him across Europe, including extended stays at RAF Jever and RAF Ballykelly, before he retired at the rank of Senior Technician. After leaving the RAF, Dave worked as a commercial aircraft mechanic with Rolls Royce for several years. Like many former Boy Entrants, Dave developed a "wanderlust" that led him to Alberta, Canada, where he worked as a heavy-duty mechanic before retiring.
No story about Dave would be complete without talking about his lifelong passion for all things dog-training. In addition to being a breeder for over 50 years, Dave was a Working Trial, Obedience, Tracking, and Confirmation competitor and Judge in Canada. He worked as a civilian canine instructor with the Leicester City Police and the Edmonton City Police. He was instrumental in the development of Canine Search and Rescue in Alberta and was a part of the first operational SAR Dog Team with a positive find in the province. Dave and his dogs went on to make many other finds and helped bring closure to families of missing persons.
Dave will be remembered fondly as one of the most intelligent, funny, and interesting people many of us had the privilege to meet. He had an unwavering sense of justice and always spoke his mind (even when the situation might not have called for it). He loved nothing more than good dogs, good beer, and bad women. His wisdom and humor will forever be missed.
In lieu of flowers, please have a pint of proper ale and a long conversation with a friend.
