Lucy and her twin sister Leona were born to Maria and Fred Sweryda on Dec 23rd, 1939 in Edmonton, AB. They were the younger sisters of her two brothers Walter and Stephen. Their father worked at a coal mine in the winters and during the summer would look after a large garden.
Times were tough while she was growing up as money was scarce. They had no radio, television, phone or toys and so much time was spent visiting families and playing with other children in the neighbourhood.
Lucy went to Mount Royal Elementary and then Eastglen High School before graduating from the University of Alberta with a degree in Education. She started her career teaching classes before transitioning into running the school’s library. She taught for 25 yrs before retiring from that profession.
It was during her first teaching assignment that she met her future husband Norman whom she married on Aug 25th, 1961. Later on Feb 28th 1970 they welcomed their only child and son Norman Lindsay into the family.
During the latter part of her teaching career she chose to work part-time which allowed her to take on another position with the Stony Plain Courthouse as their court librarian which she worked at for many years.
During the whole of her life Lucy loved gardening. She would plant flowers and vegetables and was always proud of what she was able to produce. She would enter many flower and garden shows and use her winnings to buy seeds and plants to use for next year. As a member of various horticulture societies she would also often be called upon to judge various rural shows.
Lucy will be forever remembered by her husband of 56 years Norman, her son Lindsay and his wife Michele, two grandchildren Owen and Sophia, and her twin sister Leona. Lucy was predeceased by her two brothers Walter and Stephen.
