Margaret was born March 29,1928 as Margaret May Durocher. When she was one, she was adopted by George and Blanche Grimstead and grew up near Amaranth, MB. In 1949 she married Russell Grantham and together they farmed and raised animals. Mom remained on the farm for some time before
finally deciding to move. In 2002 she moved to Alberta to be closer to her son and daughter in law.
Growing up her life was not easy and money was scare. From a young age she worked alongside her dad and then her husband in the fields, with the animals (all of whom she made into pets), and on Lake Manitoba commercial fishing in the winter. She loved horses and riding was one of her greatest joys. She spent many hours drinking tea at the kitchen table (and after stirring if bubbles formed scooping them with her teaspoon and drinking them as they were good luck) as she watched the birds at the feeders only an arms length away, especially the antics of the hummingbirds.
Although mom had little formal education she was smart, you only had to show her something once and she had it; well all except math which wasn’t her favourite. She knit socks and mitts and days before she passed she wanted wool so she could knit some socks for herself.
She was a strong woman and a determined character. Her filter wasn’t used very often as she freely gave advice, and you certainly knew where you stood with her, she did not hold back. She would often say “don’t get your feathers ruffled, but….” And then would say something that would inevitably get our
feathers ruffled. Mom had many stories and loved telling and retelling them. When anyone would come over she would always make time for a visit.
Grandma is remembered by her grandchildren for her special, and oh so unhealthy way to cook eggs, glazed doughnuts, her famous fudge, the always full decorative dish of Scotch spearmint candies, her whipped cream and marshmallow dessert with cherry pie filling on top, sneaking treats in the shopping cart to make sure her “kids” had treats when they got home, playing with her stacking stools, and her ceramic models and pictures of wildlife and horses. All of this to say “even though she could be gruff or blunt you always knew she loved you”.
Margaret left us on May 20, 2021 and is predeceased by her husband Russell, her mother Della (Durocher) Brooks, her half-sister and brother, her adoptive parents, brother and sister.
Mom is survived by her Manitoba family, daughter Leeann and her husband Doug, their sons Derek (Becky) and Jared (Kelli) and her great-grandson Nathan, her Alberta family, son Kyle and his wife Samantha and their children Hannah, Wyatt and Ty. Also surviving are nieces and nephews and
their children in Manitoba and BC.
Cremation has taken place and when the families can get together mom will be laid to rest in the mountains which she loved.
Mom will finally be reunited with her beloved horse Barney and she can again be pain free, ride bare-back and be carefree.
