1928 - 2023
On May 8, 2023 Roy Nicholson of Edmonton passed away at the age of 95 years. He was predeceased by his wife of 54 years Kathleen (Kay), who died in 2005.
He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his children Greg (Tanis) of Edmonton, Warren of London, England, Brad (Anne) of Edmonton, Darryl of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Pam (Brad Schneider) of Stony Plain; his grandchildren Scott, Tara (Dexter), Bryce (Stephanie), Calene, Ashley, Emily and Colton; his six great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
Born in Dauphin, Manitoba and raised in nearby Gilbert Plains, he met and married Kay Morgan in 1950. The couple headed west, living for a time in Saskatchewan before settling in Edmonton. Roy began his long and successful career at the Edmonton Journal in 1957, retiring in 1988.
A dedicated husband and father, Roy was the heart and soul of his family. Particularly in his later years, he relished his role as patriarch of the extended Nicholson-Morgan-Pollon clan, dispensing astute observations and wise advice from his La-Z-Boy to relatives near and far. He was a loyal neighbour and friend, staying in regular contact with many Journal colleagues throughout his long retirement.
Though he never forgot his Manitoba roots, he loved his adopted hometown, especially its Oilers and Eskimos. He was a keen and loyal daily reader of the Journal, following politics, sports and current events in its pages for over 65 years.
Roy lived happily at Lewis Estates Retirement Residence since 2017. His family would like to especially recognize and thank Ashika Naidu for the exceptional care she provided to him. Her daily friendship, help and encouragement meant the world to Roy. Many thanks, Ashika.
A Celebration of Life in Roy’s honour will be held Monday, May 15, 2023 at 11am at Parkland Funeral Services, 3502 44 Avenue, Stony Plain, Alberta.
