EULOGY
Good morning. I am Phillip Honegan, my Dad’s oldest child. Our immediate family consisted of Dad, Mom, me, five brothers and one sister, Sandra, whose birth was the joy of his entire life (after six boys who wouldn’t be joyful for a girl).
Arthur Honegan was a principled and proper man. This was exemplified in his appearance, bearing, speech and the way he carried himself. He instilled these principles in his children. There should be no elbows on the dining table and no slurping at meals. If you broke these rules, he would say “Get up! Leave the table!” and that would be the end of your meal. He was slow to anger but if pushed beyond a certain point he would speak his mind forcefully.
Dad was a loving husband to his wife of 65 years, Inez. His treat for Mom every Friday night while living in Jamaica was Buckingham ice-cream and Johnson’s patty. When she became ill, he dedicated himself to her care. We were all surprised to discover that he could in fact cook, clean the house and do laundry. He insisted that my brothers and I treat our wives with the same care and respect.
My Dad was an extremely hard-working man. He did whatever was needed to provide for his family. He started working at an early age and worked continuously until he retired at age 65. Due to his hard work, while we grew up poor, we never felt deprived.
Dad was a loving and indulgent grandfather, and all of his grandkids loved spending time with him, especially when Mom was not there as they would get special treats such as a trip to McDonald’s.
After my Mom’s death we feared that he would not be with us for long due to love and closeness of their relationship, but he showed us that he was made of sterner stuff. Ten years later at 101 years old, he was still going to the gym every weekday. He took great pleasure in recounting the number of reps he did on each exercise. He also attended Mass every Sunday morning, dressed in a suit and tie, of course.
My Dad had a long, full and rich life. Sadly, he was pre-deceased by his beloved wife, Inez, son Mansfield, stepson, Byron, stepdaughter, Beverly, granddaughter, Shakira, grandson, Craig and great grandson, Sean Jr. He leaves behind sons Phillip, Fearon, Derrick, Markland, Francis and Ferdinand; daughter Sandra; grandchildren Tamara, Phillip, Jr., Sean, Aaron, Gavin, Kavel, Kevan, O’Khan, Damian, Morgan, and Valene; great grandchildren Genesis, Madison, Logan, Jaelyn, Rylan, Ameri, Zharia and Amakai; and numerous other relatives and friends.
