She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Norman Hammer; her beloved children, Cynthia Curtis (Lewis) and Gordon Curtis (Kate); and her stepchildren, Dianne McCarthy (Michael), Susan Kushmerek (Stanley), Douglass Hammer (Jodi), and Russell Hammer (Kelly). Ruth was a proud grandmother to eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her parents, Ruth and Charles Collins; her sister, Barbara Lewis; her brother, Edward Collins; and her infant daughter, Sarah Curtis.
Ruth lived a full and vibrant life. In her early years, she delighted in fishing and boating with her family in Chatham, Massachusetts. Her adventurous spirit led her to the skies as both a single-engine pilot and a Pan Am stewardess, sparking a lifelong love of travel and cultural exploration.
As she and Norman built their life together, they shared many joyful years traveling and golfing. Ruth also enjoyed a good game—especially bridge—and took comfort in the quiet pleasure of watching birds and wildlife from her kitchen window. Her wit, warmth, and wisdom touched everyone she met. She was a woman of strength, intelligence, and grace, who lived with purpose and wore many hats with pride.
A private memorial will be held by the family to honor and celebrate Ruth’s extraordinary life.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Treasure Coast Hospice in her memory.
