
Bill was born on February 18, 1934, in Pittsburgh, PA, to William R. Davis, Sr., from Greensburg, PA, and Mabel Bradbury from Huddersfield, England.
After Bill graduated from Wilkinsburg (PA) High School in 1952, he earned a B.A. from Allegheny College in 1956 and a J.D. from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 1959.
It was at the University of Pittsburgh where he met his future wife, Elaine E. Davis, who was completing her college degree at Carnegie Mellon University. They were married in 1958 and resided in Chambersburg from 1960 to 2023.
After graduation, Bill worked for U.S. Steel Corporation in Pittsburgh from 1959 – 1960 before serving in the U.S. Army in 1961 – 1962. Bill then practiced law for 43 years (1963 – 2005) in Chambersburg, PA. He was a longstanding member of the Pennsylvania and Franklin County Bar Associations.
Bill is survived by his wife Elaine E. Davis, age 90. He is also survived by two children, Aimee Steimer of Maineville, OH, and Mike Davis of Jupiter, FL. He additionally is survived by son-in-law Marc Steimer, daughter-in-law Cecelia Davis and three grandsons, Marc Steimer, Jr. (San Francisco, CA), Eric Steimer (Pinehurst, NC) and Grant Davis (San Francisco, CA). Marjorie Swanson, Bill’s older sister from Pittsburgh, predeceased him.
Bill served on Board of Directors at Valley Bank & Trust Company (Chambersburg) as both its Legal Counsel & Chairman of Board.
Bill was active in sports. In high school he played football (quarterback), basketball (guard) and baseball (3rd baseman). He was the first ever 9th grader to start for Wilkinsburg’s varsity baseball team. He went on to play college baseball (catcher) and football (quarterback) at Allegheny College. After college, he played competitive tennis and squash.
Bill had a deep passion for golf. He was a member of Chambersburg Country Club from 1963 to 2015. He served on the United States Golf Association’s Senior Amateur Committee as an expert in Rules of Golf, officiating at several USGA National Championships. Bill also served on the Executive Committee for the Pennsylvania Golf Association.
At the request of the deceased, no public services will be held. The family will gather for a private remembrance. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, EIN 62-0646012, Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38015, for its general purposes.
