

Betty was born in Virginia to Della F. Coffelt and John B. Coffelt on July 30th, 1940. After graduating from Wilson Memorial High School, Betty began raising her family as well as working in the cafeteria of Stuarts Draft High School, where she spent more than 40 years as a staple of the school. In her spare time, Betty enjoyed gardening, going to yard sales, reading and cooking for her family. She adored her family and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was also fascinated by history, especially enjoying American and ancient Egyptian history.
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 49 years, Aubrey L. Byrd; a sister, Dorothy Simmons; a son-in-law Scot McKenzie; a niece, Betty Simmons; and a nephew, Steven Wingfield.
Betty is survived by her children, Donna McKenzie of Waynesboro, Doris Byrd of Troy, OH, Sharon Byrd and Jim Hearl of Stuarts Draft, and Nancy Campbell and husband Alan of Staunton. In addition, Betty is survived by her grandchildren, Stephanie McLear and husband Justin, Michael Byrd and wife Rachael, Michelle McKenzie and husband Andy Josselyn, Rachael McKenzie, Eric McKenzie, and Hunter Campbell; great grandchildren, December, Aubrey, Brooklyn, Scarlet and Harper. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Ann Wingfield.
A graveside service will be conducted on Wednesday, January 21st, 2026 at 11:00 AM at Augusta Memorial Park with Pastor Billy Coffey officiating.
Following the service, the family will receive friends at Betty’s home for a time of fellowship and remembrance.
