Mrs. Carwell was born on May 29, 1939 in Washington, DC and was a daughter of the late Gilbert Hamilton and Ruby Dale (Allen) Brandenburg. Betsy spent her life putting others before herself. Through her illness, she always told everyone she “was fine” or “fit as a fiddle”. Her greatest enjoyment was sending cards to everyone throughout the year. Her lifelong devotion of always thinking of others will stand as her legacy. Unlike her nickname “poor ole Betsy” (given to her by Herbie during his racing career), she was rich with loving family, friends and pups.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Hoover “Herb” Carwell on August 26, 2019.
She is survived by her daughters, Debby Carwell, Lu Ann Smith, both of Raphine; a sister, Martha Black of Stuarts Draft; grandchildren, Blake Smith, Hayley Smith; two special nieces, Sherry Wiltshire, Melissa Black; life-long friend Thelma Swisher; and her beloved dog “Jessie James”.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, February 15, 2022 at 11 AM at Mt. Hermon Cemetery in Newport.
