

Howard was born in Virginia to Ruby (Quillen) Starnes and Ian Starnes on April 19th, 1924. Howard served in the US Army during World War II and was in France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, & England. Before his retirement, he lived in New Jersey and worked at the textile mills in Paterson. When he & Edna retired, they moved back to Virginia and resided in Stuarts Draft. He loved gardening, cooking, and working on his home. He loved it when his family came to visit, and he treasured each moment.
Howard was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Marie Snyder Starnes; two daughters, Alice Jean Young and Brenda Cash Martin; and several brothers; a sister; and a grandson, Robert Glen Young.
Howard leaves behind a daughter, Louise Young; and a stepdaughter, Rebecca Starnes. His beloved grandchildren; Ralph Martin Jr., Zachary Starnes, Donna Young, Melissa Martin Neese, Kimberly Martin Howdyshell, Joann Brown, and Randy Young. He was also blessed with great-grandchildren, Robert Young, Ashley Rojas, Logan Martin, Lyndsie Martin, CJ Neese, Lance Howdyshell, Raven Young, Landon Howdyshell, Cheyenne Starnes, Brandon Starnes, and Gabriel Young. Howard also had six great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, January 17th, 2025 at 2:00 PM at the Stuarts Draft Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes with Pastor Billy Coffey officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Steeles Tavern.
The family will receive friends on Friday, January 17th, 2025 at 1:00 PM at the Stuarts Draft Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes.
