Kelley was born in Homestead, Florida, to Betty M. Sims and Dean Paul Sims on July 24th, 1956. After moving to Virginia, Kelley spent the next 25 years working for the Department of Forestry, retiring as the Facilities Manager of Sherando Lake. Kelley loved the outdoors and was a talented craftsman and carpenter. He was a jack of all trades who could fix anything and hated sitting still. He was always seeking the next adventure and had a very kind heart, especially for animals, and rescued many stray dogs. Kelly was the epitome of “don’t judge a book by it’s cover.” He could come across as sharp, but he had a heart of gold and will be missed by everyone who knew him.
Kelley was preceded in death by his parents; and his favorite sheep, Lily.
Kelley is survived by his daughter, Kelsey Sims of Florida; grandsons, Isaiah Martinez and Nicholas Benitez Jr; brothers, Kenneth Sims of Florida, Michael Sims of Florida, Wesley Sims of Washington; and sister Debbie Barton Sims of North Carolina. In addition, he is survived by his girlfriend Lizzie Russell and many friends.
Following cremation, the family will be planning a celebration of life at a later date.
