Nancy May Witt

On February 26, 2018, Dr. Nancy Garrett Witt departed this earthly life. She was born June 13, 1929 in Vinton, a daughter of the late Charles Pickett and Jessie May (Dickerson) Garrett. Dr. Witt was educated at Roanoke College, Salem and the Medical College of Virginia, Richmond. She was a strong supporter of Liberal Arts Education, served many years on the Roanoke College Board of Trustees and received an Honorary Degree in D.S. in 2003. She spent twenty years with the Department of Mental Health of Virginia and developed the children’s treatment program at DeJarnette Hospital. She was the first woman to serve as Director of a Psychiatric Hospital in Virginia. Dr. Witt devoted her life to her patients, family and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Phyllis Jean Garrett. She is survived by her former husband, Samuel Witt; daughters ,Ruth Witt Ramsey and Sarah Witt Argenbright; sons, Herschel Garrett Witt and Joseph Pickett Witt; grandchildren, Christopher Alan Dingman, Stephen Garrett Sipe, Jessi Mae Ramsey, Jeffery Darrel Ramsey and Garrett Austin Witt; great-grandchildren, Jaxsen Ellis Ramsey and Adrian Carter Chittum. She also leaves a longtime friend, Gladys Ann Coeyman. A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, March 1, 2018 at the Temple House of Israel Cemetery, Staunton by Rabbi Joe Blair. Active pallbearers will be Jeffery Ramsey, Garrett Witt, Herschel Witt, Joseph Witt, Darrel Ramsey and Sam Witt. The will be no public viewing or visitation at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Temple House of Israel, 15 N. Market St., Staunton, VA 24401 or to a charity of your choice.
