

He was a graduate of the Park School of Brookline, MA, Noble and Greenough School, Class of ’55, and Harvard University Class of ’59.
After graduation, Chub served as an officer in the US Coast Guard in Alaska and Florida.
Chub was a lifelong sports enthusiast and conservationist. At Nobles he played ice hockey and was captain of his baseball and football teams. At Harvard he was a member of the varsity football team and the Owl Club. He was member of the Harvard Varsity Club.
An avid fly fisherman Chub wet many a line in the Sudbury River, at Bass Rocks in Glouchester, MA and the rivers of Canada, including the Moisie and Black Brook on the Miramichi.
He loved the great outdoors and worked to preserve open spaces through Ducks Unlimited, Trout Unlimited and the Sudbury Valley Trustees.
Chub and his wife, the former Judith M. Walker, would have observed their 47th wedding anniversary on August 28th.
Besides his wife he leaves a daughter, Tamar Newell Taffaro, of Merrimack, NH, two sons, Thomas Dudley Newell of Beaumont, TX, and William Rogers Newell , of Boston, a brother J. Louis Newell of Dedham, a sister, Anne N. Robertson of Milton and Falmouth and two grandchildren, Lilyanne E. Newell of TX and Victoria A. Taffaro of NH.
A memorial service will be held at the First Parish Church, Unitarian, 382 Walnut St, Brookline, MA on October 13, 2012 at 11am.
Contributions in lieu of flowers can be made to the Franklin S. “Chub” Newell Memorial Scholarship fund at Noble and Greenough School or to the Massachusetts Chapter of Ducks Unlimited.
