

Harry Edward Lockery, 84, of Sudbury Massachusetts, died June 19, 2012 after a brief illness. He was born in New York City, May 23, 1928 and his family moved to New Haven, Connecticut in 1931. He was the husband of the late Patricia Klarman Lockery to whom he was married for 55 years. They moved to Sudbury in 1958.
Mr. Lockery was a graduate of Hillhouse High School in New Haven (1945) and Yale University (1948) where he majored in electrical engineering and was elected to the Tau Beta Pi Honorary Engineering Society. Later he received a Master of Science degree in control theory at Worcester Polytechnical Institute, where he also completed his course work for a doctorate.
His career in engineering and management spanned more than six decades, ending only with his recent death. A holder of more than 35 patents, his technical achievements include the first onboard weighing system for large commercial aircraft including the Boeing 747 and the Douglas DC-10, systems for measuring the thrust of the Saturn V rocket, which eventually took astronauts to the Moon, and the force measuring elements of leading grocery-store scanner-scales found nationwide. He started two successful engineering companies before leaving to work independently in 2009. In 1994 he received the prestigious Technical Excellence Award of International Society for Weighing and Measurement.
Vigorous in mind and body, he was Connecticut State Interscholastic Spring Board Diving Champion 1944 and 1945. In college, he was named All American, Springboard Diving, National Amateur Athletic Union (1946) and was a cheerleader for Yale. He also enjoyed tennis, skiing, and sailing. In the 1970's he was active in local politics, founding the Sudbury Association for Good Education. In later years, he was an energetic member of several barbershop-style singing groups, including the Sounds of Concord.
Mr. Lockery is survived by his three sons: Shawn, of Eugene, Ore.; Christopher, of Arlington, Mass.; Edward of Seattle, Wash.; their spouses, five grandchildren and a large extended family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to: Central Connecticut Coast YMCA (New Haven), Yale Swimming and Diving Association, and Sounds of Concord. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Anselm Church, 100 Landham Road, Sudbury, Mass. at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, June 26, with visitation at the Duckett-J. S. Waterman & Sons Home of Memorial Tribute, 656 Boston Post Rd (a.k.a Rt 20), Sudbury from 8:00 am to 9:30 am prior to the Mass.
