Born in Berlin, New Hampshire, Cliff was a first-generation American of Norwegian immigrants, who became U.S. citizens circa 1930. He was proudest of two early accomplishments—his decisions to enlist in the U.S. Army at age 17, which, after his service, allowed him to attend the University of New Hampshire thanks to the GI Bill, and, after graduation, to move to Norway to find a bride. Cliff and Molly married in Norway in 1957, returned to the U.S., and settled in Massachusetts.
Cliff worked for Polaroid Corp. for most of his professional life, retiring shortly before Molly’s death in 1994. He was an avid sailor and boat owner since the 1960s and had a mooring in Marion Harbor for 40 years. Cliff and Molly enjoyed many sailing holidays along the East Coast as well as in the Bahamas, Tortola, and other warm spots. He was a regular swimmer and member of the YMCA in Framingham since 1970. He was a woodworker who loved to share his projects with friends and family, and made countless custom items for them—asking only for a handwritten thank you note but no payment. He shared his woodworking talents with the YMCA annual auction and was also a generous donor to that organization, public broadcasting, and other charities.
He was a loving and generous man, who frequently surprised people with flowers. He was friendly and outgoing, and enjoyed being remembered at restaurants and shops, loving the “small town feel” of his Framingham/Sudbury extended neighborhood.
