Born in Portglenone in Northern Ireland on May 26, 1949, Norma was the daughter of the late Norman and Robina (McCaughey) McNeill. Upon arriving to New York in the 1940’s, Robina and Norman made a home in Brooklyn Heights on Henry Street, nearby the beautiful Promenade where Norma loved to roller skate as a young girl.
Norma attended the Packer Collegiate Institute for elementary and high school and graduated in 1967. She studied liberal arts and psychology at Franklin Pierce in Rindge, NH, where she met the love of her life, Charles “Chuck” Maxwell. A few months after she graduated in 1971, Norma and Chuck were married in Brooklyn, NY. They settled in Marlborough, MA, before buying their house in Framingham in 1976, where they began a family.
After a stint as a successful saleswoman in the 1970’s, Norma decided to pursue a career in education full time. She thrived on teaching kindergarten at various day care centers and schools in Framingham, ultimately leading her to the parochial school, St. Bridget’s. Upon retiring in 2005, she traveled all over the United States with her husband, Chuck, with whom she enjoyed 41 years of marriage. When Chuck passed away from cancer last December, Norma’s broken heart never healed.
A devoted, charismatic, and caring mother who loved to knit, practice Tai Chi, and summer in Cape Cod, Norma is survived by her son, Todd Maxwell, of St. Petersburg, FL, and her daughter, Kimberly Maxwell, of Cambridge, MA. Calling hours will be held Saturday, November 2, from 4-8 PM at the Duckett – J.S. Waterman & Sons Home of Memorial Tribute, 656 Boston Post Road (Rt. 20) SUDBURY. In lieu of flowers, donations in Norma’s memory may be directed to the MSPCA-Angell, ATTN: Donations, 350 South Huntington Avenue, Boston, MA 02130; or by visiting http://www.mspca.org/donate.
