
William T. Maloney died December 13, 2015. He had just turned 80 years old. Dr. Maloney was born in Warren, OH, on December 12, 1935 to Alice and William T. Maloney. He received B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from Case Institute of Technology, Cleveland, OH; and A.M. and Ph.D. degrees in Applied Physics from Harvard University, Cambridge, MA. From 1963 to 1965, he continued at Harvard as a Research Fellow serving in 1964 as lecturer in applied physics. In 1965 he joined the Technical Staff of the Sperry Research Center, Sudbury, MA, and in 1983, the Polaroid Corporation in Cambridge, MA where he was a Senior Scientist. He researched and was awarded patents in numerous technologies now in daily use: holography, optical signal processing and memories, fingerprint recognition, digital magnetic recording, and electronic photography and printing. He was a member of Tau Beta Pi, Eta Kappa Nu, Sigma Xi, the American Physical Society and the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
Dr. Maloney was an avid hiker in the White Mountains, an energetic amateur genealogist and linguist, a lover of ancient history, a friend of birds, and a respectable ragtime pianist. He was an active citizen in the Town of Sudbury. In 1997 he was recognized for his special contributions to the life of the Lincoln Sudbury Regional High School on whose committee he served for two terms. He also served on the Town Administration Committee, the Property Tax Equity Review Committee, and was the Lincoln-Sudbury representative to the Minute Man Vocational Technical School. In recent years he was involved with the Hope Sudbury Foundation and valued the collegiality of the Retired Men’s Association and the Idlers.
Remembering him are his wife Jeanne, his brother, Paul and sister, Dolores, his two children, Mary Ellen and William F., his daughter in law, Wendy, and granddaughter Eileen.
Visiting hours will be held Friday December 18, from 4-8 PM at the Duckett-J. S. Waterman & Sons Home of Memorial Tribute, 656 Boston Post Rd. (Rt. 20) ,Sudbury, MA. A Funeral. Mass will be hecelebrated at our Lady of Fatima Church, 160 Concord Rd.,, Sudbury, MA, Saturday at 10 AM.
