I so enjoyed working with Al at the Journal News.  From the days of film, developing, sizing, veloxing, plating and printing up to the digital age. He was always sharp  and his sense of humor could be too! And how he loved his Annie!!  As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words, and the photo you picked to go with his obituary says so much about him.  The warmth and assurance is reflected there.

I first met Al 24 years ago, when he was soliciting volunteers for a Morristown soup kitchen.  There I learned from the 'Master' how to make pancakes for a hundred people that somehow always tasted better than mine, even with the same receipe.  I will always remember Gramps for his smile that stretched ear to ear, his quick wit, positive outlook, and never ending spirit and energy.  He enjoyed a full life.  I am thankful for knowing and enjoying his company, hearing his reflections on life, having him serve his country in the Army, and fostering a such a loving and supportive family.  Family holidays and dinners will never be quite the same, I will miss him terribly.

My dad was a good father, I could not have asked for a better one.  He taught me many of life's lessons, photography and car repair.  I will miss him dearly. Rest In Peace Dad.

Our Journey begins with love, laughter and happy times and it continues onto beautiful experiences with so many people coming into our lives like mine.   Mr. & Mrs.  Witt were my second parents.  I know I am not the only one that felt that way they loved everyone that came into their lives.  There are some chapters in life you do not want closed, saying goodbye to Mr. Witt was one of those for me.  I know Marie, and her family are feeling a great loss.  There are so many people that Mr. Witt has touched.  We will be reunited one day and I hope that bring some comfort to my dear fiend Marie because I love her so much and I love the family that she is surrounded by, who have all loved each other and given me the foundation of knowing that love and family is possible. I am so sorry for your loss.  Your Dad was a remarkable man.  Talk about a life well lived.  Jerry & I always enjoyed the time spent with your parents among the laughter, there were tears but always there was love.

Dad, I miss you! I miss your laughter, your smile, your humor and your good nature towards all. You are an inspiration to us, through your devotion to family, faith, and helping others. One of my many fond memories of you while I was growing up is of you cooking breakfast (pancakes) on Sunday after Mass. You would sing and dance while cooking and making a mess but enjoying every minute of it. You always found joy in all that you did. Gramps I had you with me for 42 years...a touchstone in my life - what do I do now? I will try to honor your memory by living life to its fullest, loving my family fiercely, and doing good in this world. Ava and Marina will be comforted in the knowledge that you are watching over them. I will talk to you often and make you proud. It seems like only yesterday that you were picking me up in your arms and laughing as I squished your cold earlobes in my little fingers....I will love you always.

Dad and I had many conversations of late that we were unable to have when I was younger.  We had deep soul searching moments.  We talked about the things people are afraid to bring up these days;  religion, politics, social issues.  Many times we saw issues differently but came to respect and understand each other.  It was a gift to have those moments with him.  God Bless him and may he rest in peace.

Where do I begin to comment on the life of this wonderful man? I've just read everyone's messages...and they say it all! A gentleman...and a gentle man! The smile in every room was because he was there with his positive attitude and spiritual outlook on life. A realist who didn't let things get him down and who chose the difficult ending of his days with us instead of taking the easy way out...always giving good example! It was his welcoming attitude along with that of his buddy, Tony B. that drew us back each week to Sacred Heart church...and I am forever grateful. Sleep well, dear friend, in the arms of Our Lord!

It has been my honor, privilege and joy to have known Al.  Little did I know when Al came to volunteer at the Rockland Interfaith Breakfast Program how much he would impact my life. 
Al had a way of lighting up a room with his love of people, his generous spirit, his humor, his over-the-top-kindness & his joie de vie.  Al's love of faith, family, and friends was obvious and molded him into the special person he was.  My friend, Aloysius has left a footprint on my heart and will always be one of the most unforgettable people I will ever know.   Sherwin, too will recall the fun Leica conversations he had with Al over the years and how good Sherwin felt after being in Al's Company. 

Do not weep long because he is gone. Smile forever because he was here.

My Father was the most giving person I knew.  When I was about 15 years old we went to Germany to visit my sister and her husband stationed there in 1973.   While we were in the airport waiting for our flight to return home a military solider approached my Dad to ask if he could help get him home for leave.  Dad without hesitation gave the solider money for a ticket to get home.  The solider asked him for his address so he could repay him.  Dad's reply was that he did not need to repay him, but to pay it back to someone in need, to do a good deed for someone else "the pay it forward philosophy". 
God Bless you Dad.  I will miss you dearly.  May Gods eternal light shine on you.

I just learned about al. Passing away i was truly a pleasure to work and know him at sacred heart players my heartfelt condolences  to the witt family

Al Witt, a Cornerstone brother and long time member of Sacred Heart Parish, passed away this week. In addition to Cornerstone, Al was an Usher at the 10 AM mass on Sunday, a member of the Sacred Heart Players and the unofficial photographer of of all our social functions.


Al was one of the original 5 men that Ken Searle brought to St. Mary's in Dumont, NJ to find out what Cornerstone was all about. He along with Ed Aviles, Gary Butler, Val Cassotta, and myself had a great weekend and brought the Men's retreat back to Sacred Heart. Most importantly, however Al was just a good man in every sense of the word.

Keep him and his family in your prayers.

I was always amazed by my grandfather. He lived life to the fullest. He traveled the world and gave back to his community. He never had a lack of faith. When times were tough you would never know because he saw the world with Rose colored glasses and there was always an opportunity to learn something new; a language, a technology, a relationship it didn't matter he was an adventurer and up for the challange. Thank you for being an inspiration for me throughout my life gramps. I will miss and love you always.

Always living life to the fullest, Gramps set many examples to live by - he will forever be a legendary Grandfather in so many ways. Each time we gathered he would say something quick-witted to make us laugh, or do something heart-felt to remind us of his love.  He has been the cause of countless smiles and has positively touched many lives.  Gramps was always a kid at heart, he taught us first hand that age is only a number. We love you and will miss you.

Uncle Al was a man who touched many lives. He enjoyed and lived his life to the fullest. And in enjoying life he made sure he captured those special moments with his photography. Life changes but memories last a lifetime. Thanks Uncle Al for all the memories and pictures that remain in our hearts. Rest in peace.

Grandpa was an inspiration to me.  Always caring, and patient.  Easy to talk to and fun to be with.  A man of strong convictions.  Always optimistic and happy to share.  He will be sorely missed.

Although I moved to Florida I have very fond memories of Uncle Al and the laughter shared in all our houses.  I remember as a child always looking forward to getting together as the adults would sit at the dining table talking and laughing as us kids (cousins) got to play together. Al was always a good friend to me. I'm so glad that we had time to spend together. 
In my opinion, he is a role model for all of us to follow. I believe he truly had a blessed and wonderful life.
The tears I am shedding now are not for him, but for his family and the rest of us who will cherish our memories of him and who will miss him always.

     You can write a book about some of the many wonderful virtues that this man had.  One that stands out in my mind happened (probably) over 40 years ago.  Uncle Al (as he was prone to doing) was fixing something on our roof at our home in Staten Island, N.Y..  Even while doing this, he still managed to watch what I was doing and make sure that I was okay and not in any danger.  At one point, I remember running across the busy street without looking.  He patiently came down from his work and walked over to me.  In a loving, non-threatening way, he explained (in language to a five year old) that there was a right way and a wrong way to cross a crowded street.  I never forgot this nor will I ever forget the numerous human qualities he possessed. It was a rare gift that few embody.
     They say that the best way to judge a man's character is how he treats others.  I would have to say that he goes to the front of the line because he treated every man and woman as a king. 
     Rest in Peace, Uncle Al, you did really well.

Dear Uncle Al...all my memories of him are wrapped within his quick and contagious loud laughter. He so enjoyed life. He so enjoyed people. He was such a good listener! I fondly carry his story of meeting General Patton up front and personal and having the moxie to slyly let "Ol blood and guts" know that" the private only knows how to drive the  tank carrying truck ,not the tank." Fuming Patton went off to locate a tank driver. Al the while Al Witt held within him the knowledge that he himself had driven the tank unto the truck to begin with,but he was not going to be silly enough to put himself in  a tank driver seat ...right in front of Patton. Rarely do you meet a man who has had such a significant impact on all those that knew him. "Gramps" was always giving, giving his time to a dear friend in need, giving his love to his family that meant everything to him, giving his support and devotion to his beloved church. His smile and positive approach to life was contagious and I'm so grateful to have known him. Our hearts are heavy and will miss you always Gramps.

Even thought I have not bern in communication with Lois or the family for many years I will never forget all the wonderful times I shared with Mr Witt and his family RIP and may God be with the family in this time of sorrow

I came to meet Al 47 years ago, when I came to "steal" his daughter Alyse.  It was then I found out that he had been fortunate to survive a massive heart attack that many would not; In the years that followed, I came to see just how fortunate he was.  He survived a World War, met his "soul mate" had 5 loving children who brought 4 wonderful grand children who brought 9 great-grand-children into his life and they all adored him.  I was able to spend 2 days with him this past weekend and he told me how much he loved his family and how happy they made him and how fortunate his life has been.  I agree;  he will always be with us; fortunately.

Whenever Al Witt's name was mentioned, or whenever we had the pleasure of being in his presence a smile would automatically appear on our faces. Such a warm human being with a great sense of humor. Al was a wonderful father-in-law to me and I remember many wonderful times with him.   He was always joking and had such a great way about him.   He was the life of the party as we all know.   He will be missed.  Rest in peace.

Al Witt was the light in the room, the optimistic fellow, the religious man who did much good, the boss who used sugar rather than salt, the newspaper photographer who engaged his subjects, the father and husband who was always there for his family. In his long life, Al gave to everyone.

Aloysius was a legend who will live forever in the hall of fame.   His influence spanned multiple generations and I am grateful that my children had the opportunity to know their charismatic great grandpa.  He was, above all else, a true family man who proudly served his country and gave selflessly to help others.  I will miss him and I offer my most sincere condolences to all who were lucky enough to know him, especially his family.
