Another hero of New York City has been lost. Bruce Gonzalez, retired FDNY EMS who had actively fought to protect and help people in the midst of the September eleventh attacks, was tragically lost to us from toxic exposure from said attacks.
Bruce, known to many far and wide as “Batman”, had retired shortly after the attacks in November of 2001, having served as a member of Cadet Class 1, Station 18 (Harlem), DTS (both BIO MED and Licensed Locksmith), and Manhattan Central Booking. After his time as a public servant, Bruce returned to school to become a respiratory therapist, continuing to protect people during emergencies and operations just as he always had. Known among friends and co-workers for his endearing smile and hearty laugh, Bruce was always ready for a conversation just as he was ready to fight with faith and hope at whatever the world may throw at him. Spurred by the belief that hard work builds a better future, He has made a difference in the lives of many, and his absence will be felt far and wide.
Monday morning at 8:14 of June 6, 2022, Bruce finally succumbed to a hero's rest. He is survived by his wife Katty Gonzalez, seven children, Greg, Nicole, Matthew, Ryan, Ashley, and Laurren, his sisters Maureen, Clarice, Liz, Margie, and brothers Chris and Walter, and many more family members. Bruce is reunited with his son Stephen who had passed away several years ago.
The memorial services will be Saturday 6/11/22 3-6pm at Wanamaker Funeral Home at 177 route 59, Suffern NY 10901
In lieu of flowers please make donations to Rosemary Farm Equine Rescue. Bruce had a long and profound love of horses and one day wished to own and retire alongside these gentle beasts. With your contributions you will help horses find forever homes and allow some to retire with grace.
