Dan Stevens, native and longtime resident of Suffern, died peacefully on February 5 after a period of declining health. Parkinson’s Disease robbed him of his well-known strength and athleticism but not his fierce drive for independence and self-reliance.
Born and raised in ‘Viola’ to Ned and Sarah (Dodd) Stevens, he was the seventh of eight siblings, all who predecease him except his beloved younger brother and Irish twin Robert “Bobby” Stevens (Anita) of Tuxedo.
In 1950 Dan was invited to the Sadie Hawkins Day dance at Suffern High by Mary Callaghan; she predeceased him in January 2021 after 64 years of marriage. Surviving are their four loving children and spouses Patricia and Albert Gumbs of Wilmington, NC, Pamela and Mitchell Bernstein of Waretown, NJ, Daniel and Grace Stevens and Peter and Laura Stevens all of Henderson, NV.
Dan and Mary had happy times traveling near and far in support of their grandchildren. Those beloved grandchildren and spouses include Chrysa and Andy Staiano, Douglas Gumbs, Erin and Dan Kagdis, Nina and Tom Gaube, Samantha Minasi, Meghan and Colin Goess, Peter Stevens and fiancée Danielle Scanlon, Allison Stevens, Carrie and Tom Pisani, Danny and Jessie Stevens, and Brian Stevens.
Dan was also blessed with 10 great-grandchildren and one expected in July.
Dan was a proud Air Force veteran and an active member of American Legion Post 232 in Waretown, NJ.
Working tirelessly over the years to provide for his family, Dan retired from Suffern High School, where he was a Class of 1953 graduate. A well-know student athlete, Dan remained involved with Suffern High sports as a father, grandfather and umpire, and is an inductee of their Sports Hall of Fame.
Our dad was an honest, hard-working, humble and honorable man respected by all who knew him and we will miss him always.
In lieu of flowers, Dan would appreciate contributions to American Legion Post 232 499 N. Main St
Barnegat, NJ. 08005.
