It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Eileen Kathleen Mulhare Gliddi, of Montebello, NY, on January 23, 2026. Our loss is heaven’s gain – her gregarious nature, gift of gab, and hilarious stories will have them rolling in the aisles at St. Peter’s gate.
Eileen is survived by her husband Nils of 67 years and three children with their spouses; Thomas (Diana) Gliddi of Malone NY, their son Knut and his partner Jordan Gray with her two sons, Owen and Miles Manuel, and their daughter Bryn of Lexington NC; Nils (Elaine) Gliddi, Jr. of Sarasota FL; and Marianne (David) Roncace of Valley Cottage NY, and their twins Daniel Roncace and his partner Jazmin Morales of Rye NY; and Renee (Reid) Parsekian with their daughter Zena of Nyack NY. She was predeceased by a daughter in infancy, Karen Gliddi, her parents, and her siblings – Peter Mulhare and his wives, Anastasia and Rose Marie; Mary Owens and her husband Albert, and Ann Fedoryszn and her husband Edward.
Eileen was born on May 18, 1935 in her beloved Flatbush section of Brooklyn, NY to hard working Irish immigrants, Thomas and Annie (Minogue) Mulhare. Being raised during the Great Depression and World War II taught her many lessons; hard work, financial management, and most of all – gratitude, making due with what the Good Lord gave you and never complain. Though shaped by her times she was guided by the Roman Catholic faith she cherished – God is Love and Jesus died that we shall live.
Eileen attended local Catholic schools, graduating from St. Edmund’s Commercial High School in 1953. From there it was on to a career as a bookkeeper for the New York Telephone & Telegraph Company in Manhattan. She loved music and dancing, so it was not surprising that she would meet the love of her life, a Norwegian immigrant named Nils Gliddi, at a Son’s of Norway dance. After a courtship of movies and dancing they were wed at Holy Cross Church on June 1, 1958, starting their lives together in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn and finishing it (for now) 67 years later in Montebello, none the worse for wear. Born and raised a “city” girl, a trip to her husband’s homeland turned her into a self-proclaimed “country” girl and eventually led them to build a home in a relatively rural portion of Rockland County in 1966. With a new home and some property, the couple were able to indulge their love of restoring old furniture and gardening.
Eileen took a sabbatical from her career to have a family but decided in the 1970’s to return to the work force to help make ends meet and save for her children’s college education. She wanted to work in the medical field rather than bookkeeping so she took a medical terminology course at Rockland Community College. This led to a medical receptionist position for a Pearl River pediatrician, Dr. Stern. Following the doctor’s retirement, she worked as a legal receptionist for the Suffern law firm of Lexow & Jenkins and the private practice of Robert Blackburn, Esq after the latter left the firm. Always hard working, gracious and dressed to the nines, Eileen finally retired in 1997 to her flower garden.
Eileen’s hobbies and interests evolved over time but always had an artistic bend. She was a self-taught painter with oils, becoming proficient in the Norwegian art of Rosemaling. The interior of the family home is covered with doilies and blankets that she crocheted and all family members would get something crocheted for their own homes or person – often in some outrageous colors. The exterior of the home was adorned with flower, vegetable, and rock gardens – the envy of the neighborhood. Later in life Eileen turned to writing poetry. Her poems often reflected her spirituality, love of God, and the merciful heart of Jesus. These poems were freely distributed to all but always signed by the mysterious EG.
She was one of a kind and will be deeply missed. Memorial contributions can be made to the charity of one’s choice.
Eileen was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church and a mass of Christian burial will take place on Thursday, February 5th at 10:30 am at Sacred Heart Church in the village of Suffern, NY. At Eileen’s request there will be no calling hours. Burial will take place at St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale, NY.
