It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Jeffrey John Kraus, beloved percussionist, educator, and mentor, on February 19, 2025, at the age of 72. Jeffrey's contributions to the world of music, particularly in the New York area, were immeasurable. His work as both a performer and educator impacted countless musicians, students, and audiences. Jeff was also an avid outdoorsman and fisherman who participated as a leader in the Boy Scouts of America.
Jeffrey was born in Brooklyn, New York and spent his life cultivating an exceptional career in percussion. A graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, with both a Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degree, he became a prominent figure in the New York music scene. Over the course of his career, Jeffrey had the privilege of working with world-renowned composers and ensembles, including collaborations with Milton Babbitt, Frank Zappa, John Cage, Aretha Franklin and Dave Brubeck. He performed with many prestigious groups, such as the Brooklyn Philharmonia, Hudson Valley Philharmonic, Orchestra of Our Time, and Parnassus, and contributed his talents to recordings with labels including Nonesuch and Columbia. Jeffrey also conducted and performed with the Orquesta Sinfónica de El Salvador on two occasions, served as a stand-in for Les Misérables on Broadway and toured with a ragtime band throughout the northeast and Japan.
As a teacher, Jeffrey was dedicated to shaping the next generation of musicians. He held positions at the Manhattan School of Music precollege program, United Nations International School, Green Meadow Waldorf School and Jewish Community Center of Northern New Jersey. His innovative approach to percussion education was reflected in the courses he designed at Columbia-Teachers College, Concordia College, and Bennington College. His teachings emphasized a strong understanding of both traditional percussion performance and improvisational music, creating a well-rounded foundation for his students. Many of his former pupils have gone on to successful careers, earning spots at leading institutions like Juilliard and Manhattan School of Music.
Beyond his impressive career as a performer and educator, Jeffrey was a passionate advocate for the percussion community. He believed in the power of group performance and consistently sought opportunities to build and enhance percussion programs, fostering creativity and collaboration. His workshops and concerts, featuring a wide variety of music including Brazilian and afro-Cuban jazz, traditional African and Middle Eastern rhythm/percussion, Bebop and Jazz fusion, left an indelible mark on the musical landscape.
Jeffrey was not only known for his technical skill but also for his warmth, generosity, and dedication to his craft. He was a cherished mentor, always ready to share his knowledge and experience with others. His legacy lives on through the many musicians whose lives he touched.
Jeffrey is survived by his family, colleagues, students, and friends who will forever remember his artistry and unwavering commitment to music. His memory will continue to inspire future generations of percussionists, composers, and educators.
A memorial visitation will be held Saturday, March 1, 2025 from 1pm to 5pm, at Wanamaker & Carlough Funeral Home, 177 Rt. 59, Suffern, NY 10901. Contributions in Jeffrey’s memory may be made to music education organizations that he deeply supported.
