Dr. Annie Mathew, age 94, went home to be with her Savior & Lord Jesus, on Thursday, October 5, 2023, in the company of those who loved her to join those who preceded her in death. These include her late husband Dr. Mathen Mathew, sister, Elizabeth Verghese, and brother, Cheriyan Joseph and her mother, Anna Joseph and father, T. C. Joseph. She is survived by her sons, Mathen (Bobby) Mathew and Joseph Mathew and their spouses, Martha Mathew and Asuncion Mathew together with grandchildren, David, Esther, Jonathan, Eliza and Susanna. Annie was also blessed to be able to see her great grandchildren - Micah, Abigail, Olivia and Josiah.
Born in Parur, Kerala, India, she studied Medicine in Vellore Christian Medical College and also completed her MD in General Medicine at Vellore CMC, starting her medical studies in the year 1948. She and her husband worked together for the Southern Railway Hospitals in Trichy and Madras for many years, and came to the U.S. in 1972, where she worked at Mt. Sinai Hospital, NY, the Hospital for Joint Diseases in the Bronx and Baylor College of Medicine, Houston before entering private practice in Houston, Port Isabel and Los Fresnos, Texas. She retired from private practice in Los Fresnos in 2000 being the only doctor to serve this community in South Texas for some years and for the time she was there.
Annie leaves a lasting legacy of faith and inspiration through her dedicated service to her patients and family in her roles as physician, wife, mother and grandmother. She was especially loved by her patients, and many became close family friends because she gave all her skills to ensure the health and well-being of her patients often going beyond what was necessary.
It is indeed sad to say goodbye, at least for a while until resurrection day, to one who gave of herself even as Jesus poured out Himself for our sake. Her love for Christ was evident through her sacrificial love towards her family and patients, excellence in work and support for many ministries, including that of the Houston International Christian Fellowship. We will miss her greatly but know that we shall see her again in heaven with our Lord Jesus who conquered death and shall wipe away every tear.
A visitation for Annie will be held Saturday, October 21, 2023 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at The Settegast-Kopf Company at Sugar Creek, 15015 Southwest Fwy, Sugar Land, TX 77478.
