Barbara was born on June 23, 1942 in Elmwood, Illinois. She grew up working on a farm with her parents and earned local news coverage and several trophies by raising champion steer during high school. She was also known to occasionally challenge the local hot-rodders to a street race while out and about in mom’s car. She soon graduated from Knox College as a registered nurse and then moved to Texas with husband John Cowell where she worked as a nurse in various capacities for most of her career. Among her proudest professional achievements were assisting Dr. Denton Cooley during the early heart transplant surgeries in the Houston Medical Center and opening Memorial City General Hospital in the early 1970’s. Some of her fondest memories were made with colleagues at Rosewood Medical Center where she worked as the Operating Room Supervisor for many years and where she began many lasting friendships.Throughout her career she was known for being demanding yet fair, fighting for her employees and finding ways to bring people together with a common goal of providing exceptional healthcare.
Outside of work she was at times and avid bowler and water skier in her younger years, divorced, remarried and later picked up snow skiing with husband John Weber and the Space City Ski Club. Barbara and John developed a fondness for Texas A&M University and held football season tickets for many years. They were members of the Memorial Drive United Methodist Church in Houston where Barbara later worked for a time after her retirement. She was a devoted wife and mother, dog lover and lifelong driving enthusiast with only a modest regard for speed limits and she will be missed.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband John G. Weber Jr., stepson John Richard Weber, father Carl Armstrong, mother Dorothy Baker, and stepfather William Baker.
She is survived by her son Jeff Cowell, stepdaughter Jennifer Weber and stepson Jason Weber. In addition she is remembered by many extended family members and friends who will
deeply miss her.
There will be a small, private service at church, followed by a celebration of Barbara’s life at a date to be determined.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the local animal shelter or animal charity of your choice.
