Ed was born in Hobbs, New Mexico where he was raised with his brother Steve Sziy. Ed was well known as a “little trouble maker” by his mother, and most of the community. After graduation he left the sleepy oil town and traveled to the University of New Mexico for his undergraduate education. He continued his education at the University of Houston, College of Pharmacy and followed graduation with post graduate studies and multiple advanced compounding certifications. He was a member of Phi Delta Chi, a pharmacy professional fraternity. After completing all the years of school, he became a preceptor for the University of Houston College of Pharmacy to assist other soon-to-be pharmacists in their path.
In 1979 he moved to Missouri City, but he spent several years working for a local pharmacist before the move. Ed opened Ed’s Pharmacy in 1979 where he has served the area residents since then. Ed’s Pharmacy has become the “Cheers” of pharmacies where everybody knows your name. I guess you could call him Mr. Ed, the Mr. Rogers of the community he cared for so much. If you have ever been to Ed’s you would notice the small town drug store feel with an in-house postal service, local news stand, easy blood pressure checks, and no line flu shots all in a low stress, caring, and personal environment. Even residents who moved out of the area were known to drive the extra distance for the personal service he and his staff provided. The pharmacy itself provided that hometown atmosphere where you could bump into anyone you knew. The walls were decorated with memorabilia from across the decades, and his beloved classic cars that would also make appearances in the parking lot. For years he wrote a short article for the Southwest Star dispensing advice from his years of experience in the medical field.
If you didn’t find Ed at the pharmacy, you would find him on the golf course with his golf buddies. He donated and participated in so many of the community's charity auctions and events and sponsored so many school programs (academic and sports). A large number of local students came to work at Ed’s Pharmacy during their high school years, and Ed would support and sponsor the various passions of these students such as clubs, nonprofits, and sports groups. Most of these sponsorships were done behind the scenes. He never needed public recognition, he just wanted to help.
Now is the time we want to recognize all those amazing things. He was a long time active member and donor to the Oyster Creek Rotary Club and was recognized with a Paul Harris Fellowship Award for his contributions. Although he never talked about it, he received a Texas State Senate Proclamation for his exceptional work to promote, educate, and provide the community with veterinary and human pharmaceutical compounding. He received two Proclamations in Missouri City; one named October 23-29th 1994 “Texas Pharmacy Week,” and the other named July 11, 2011 (on his birthday) as “Ed Sziy Day.” He has been featured on the front page of the Sugar Land Business Journal and the Fort Bend Business Journal on more than one occasion.
Although he left us, his legacy of his life’s work will be remembered for many decades to come. He is remembered by his wife of nearly 50 years, Suzy Sziy, daughter Erin Sziy, brother Steve Sziy, and many extended family members.
Ed was known in the community as a very generous, and giving man who was well known for assisting those in need. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you donate to a local nonprofit or charity that is dear to your heart. One of Ed’s notable charities is Alpha Search and Recovery, an organization that assists the community in a very special way. The button to donate can be found below or at AlphaSAR.org/support .
Ed wished for everyone to celebrate his life with good food and good friends after his passing. We can not think of a better place to celebrate than at Ed’s second known location, The Quail Valley City Centre, 2880 La Quinta Dr, Missouri City, TX 77459. A Celebration of Life will occur there on Saturday, April 15, 2023 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.settegastkopf.com for the Sziy family.
