Elfriede Elise Toborg: born May 3, 1934 in New York City, died October 5, 2022 in Houston, TX. At age 4, Elfriede moved to Drochtersen, Germany with her parents, Frieda and Hans. “Drafted” into the German army, Elfriede’s father also spent time as a Russian POW. He died of a transfusion reaction the day after he was released. Elfriede and her mother lived in Drochtersen, near Hamburg, where Elfriede graduated from technical high school with a major in Home Economics.
At age 20, Elfriede returned to the U.S. where she became an ‘Au Pair’ for the Weissfeld family in NYC. She took care of four generations of the family. Bernard and Thelma Weissfeld were like parents to Elfriede who was an only child. She also worked as a dental assistant with Dr. Weissfeld and Thelma in his dental office. After the Weissfelds passed, Elfriede moved to Houston to live with their daughter, Alice Weissfeld, for the last 14 years.
She is survived by her cousins, William Holtze, Robert Holtze, Fred Holtze, Maryanne Fitzgerald, Erna Jürgens, Irena Kanzler, Karen Royl, and their respective children. A special thank you to Sabine Höeper, Erna’s daughter, who supplied details of Elfriede’s early life.
Elfriede is also survived by her Houston, Texas family: Alice Weissfeld, Paula Vance, Duane May, Lance and Alana Lucas, Ernest Trevino, Hannah Heinz, Kathy Tower, and the many nurses who have cared for Elfriede the past two years. We will all miss Elfriede. She will be forever loved by her families in Germany and Texas.
A celebration of Elfriede's life will be held Friday, October 21, 2022. We invite all of Elfriede's loved ones and friends to join us for the memorial service, reception, and graveside service. Elfriede's German and Texas families have provided flowers. Donations may be made to the Houston Methodist Hospital Foundation and/or Neighbors in Action in Elfriede’s name.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.settegastkopf.com for the Toborg family.
