Jaime L. Rodriguez was a loving son, brother, husband, tio, brother-in-law, and father. Although he passed away on May 14, 2021, in Houston, Texas, at the age of sixty-eight, he lives on in the hearts of his family. He was born August 2, 1952, in Fort Lupton, Colorado to Joaquin R. Rodriguez and Isabel L. Rodriguez and soon thereafter moved to Texas. As Jaime often quipped, “I wasn’t born in Texas, but I got here as soon as I could.” Anyone who knew Jaime understood his life really began in 1976 when he met his future wife of forty-one years, Alice C. Rodriguez, in Corpus Christi. They were blessed with two children, their daughter Raquel and son Joaquin. Growing up in Uvalde, Texas, Jaime’s fondest childhood memories were swimming in the Nueces River with his parents and siblings. Jaime prided himself on being the middle child to his siblings whom he loved and admired: Joaquin, Mario, Nora, and Hector.
After high school, Jaime moved to Austin, Texas to attend the University of Texas at Austin, receiving his B.A. in Psychology in 1976. In addition to attending classes, Jaime was active in the Chicano Movement and made sure to go to as many rock concerts as possible. Upon graduating from UT-Austin, Jaime earned his Associate in Applied Science in Registered Nurse Education at Del Mar College and his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Prairie View A&M University of Texas. Eventually, he made his way to Houston, Texas, spending his entire career working for the Harris County Hospital District, impacting the lives of his patients and their families.
Jaime had a thirst for adventure and found great joy and excitement in traveling. He continued this passion with his wife in retirement, seeing national monuments and attractions in their RV. They also enjoyed going on cruises and traveling to Alaska, Hawaii, and Central and South America. Jaime also found peace and relaxation in retirement. He would often spend his time in the backyard, tending to his plants or sitting in the garage, loudly and proudly playing his music – anything from Jefferson Airplane to Los Tigres del Norte. Jaime loved the great outdoors. His favorite memories were those of camping and spending time with family at Garner State Park and the Frio River. These Texas landmarks were near and dear to his heart because they evoked happy childhood memories for him, and he was able to create new memories with his family. He enjoyed swimming with his children, nieces, and nephews in the Frio River; barbequing with his brothers-in-law; spending evenings around a campfire laughing about old stories.
Jaime’s family was his world, and he lives on in the hearts of those he loved so dearly. We celebrate Jaime by sharing happy stories of how he lived his life and the people he impacted.
His charm, tenacity, wit, and undying love will never be forgotten. C/S
