Jim was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 25, 1947, grew up in northern Illinois and graduated from Woodstock High School in 1965. After attending Bryant & Stratton Business College in Chicago, Jim enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served his country during the Vietnam War and twice had orders to go abroad. Each time circumstances changed and he served all of his military time, 1966 – 1970, working as a mainframe computer operator in Clovis, New Mexico.
Jim later graduated from the University of Houston with a bachelors degree in Business Computer Systems. He spent his entire career working in the computer technology field, holding positions in computer operations and application engineering, and ultimately advanced into information technology leadership. He spent most of his career with EDS (Electronic Data Systems) and retired at age 72.
Jim loved working, walking/hiking, sports, travel and food. His work ethic was second to none, and he was happiest when he was working on a project or doing tasks to help someone else. About the only time he would consider taking a break from work was to watch a sports-related activity ranging from youth gymnastics and soccer all the way to professional sports. Jim enjoyed working with youth as evidenced by the time he spent mentoring as part of the Junior Achievement program and in teaching high school Sunday School. Jim could also be considered a “foodie” in that he loved cooking and fine dining. He spent many hours preparing food and enjoying time with family over a meal. He is known for always preparing more than anyone could possibly consume. Jim was kind-hearted, and feeding/serving people was his way of expressing love. He made a dynamite milkshake that appropriately earned him the nickname of “The Milkshake Man” by his grandchildren.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, James P. and Marion R. Schladt, and brother Robert (Bobby) A. Schladt. He is survived by his wife Sandra G. Schladt, sister Robin A. Schladt (Mark Thering), children Tracy (Joe) Nejman, James B. Schladt, Eric (Katie) Schladt and Jason (Jessica) Schladt. Jim loved and doted on his 9 beautiful grandchildren: Nicole Schladt, Alex Nejman, Kirstin Schladt, Amber Nejman, Jillian Schladt, Landon Schladt, Jackson Schladt, Olivia Schladt and Luke Schladt. Jim’s kindness, generous heart and unique sense of humor will be greatly missed.
The family is grateful for your expressions of love, prayers, and support. Additionally, the family extends heartfelt thanks to Bayou City Hospice, The Auberge at Sugar Land, Chapelwood United Methodist Church and Tayma Shaya, MD, for the care and compassion shown to Jim and his family.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Jim’s honor may be made to the Lewy Body Dementia Association (LBDA.org) or Chapelwood United Methodist Church (Chapelwood.org).
