arms of her Savior Jesus Christ on January 21, 2022. She was born in Poplar Bluff, Missouri on
January 2, 1923. Naomi was the first born child of Samuel Kneir and Minnie Hawks Kneir. She
had 5 brothers, Verlin (deceased at 18 months) Elvin (Sonny), Vernon, Charles, and Chester.
Naomi lived with her family in a 1 1/2 story house on the Black River in Poplar Bluff. She walked 1 1/2 miles to school on a frozen, muddy road. When she arrived at school, she would change out her wet
and muddy shoes and socks and into her school shoes. Naomi developed her work ethic early
in life. Before and after school her chore was to walk or ride Old George (the horse) to move the
cows from the pasture to milk them. She also carried wood in for the fire in the wood stove. As
her brothers grew up she began to help her mother in the kitchen learning how to cook and
can foods. She completed homework by lamplight and enjoyed listening radio shows like The
Lone Ranger. Naomi loved playing in the “wash outs”, swimming and fishing in the Black River.
Her mother taught her how to garden, which developed into her passion in later years. Being
the oldest, she learned to take care of her brothers and developed an intense desire to become
a teacher.
Naomi received her Elementary School Teacher’s degree from Southeast Missouri State
College in Cape Girardeau, Missouri in 1943. She returned to Poplar Bluff and began teaching
all eight grades in a one room school house. Several of her brothers were in her class at the
same time. This is where the endearing memory of rapping them on the head with her knuckles
developed. In later years her family moved to Dallas, Texas and several of them including
Naomi began working at North American Aviation where she met and married Hollis McDaniel
and traveled extensively with him for ten years. After their divorce, she decided to put down
roots in Houston.
Naomi met the love of her life, Charles Scheps, when she began working at Scheps Ready to Wear store.
Early in their marriage they opened their home to many foster children (including Sarah Marak who was
just like an adopted child. Together with their step children Linda Armstrong and Chuck Scheps, their
family began to grow. Then in 1966, they joyfully welcomed the birth of their daughter Stacey Sadler.
Naomi became active with her husband “Charlie” in the recovery programs of AA and Alanon after his
sobriety in the 1970’s. Together they helped numerous individuals and couples begin to heal
from the affects of alcoholism on their lives. Stemming from her love of Jesus, Naomi impacted
numerous people’s lives with her listening ear and compassionate heart. She was not scared of hard work and always had a project that she was working on.She had a greenhouse built at their home in Memorial where she raised all varieties of produce and flourishing plants.
In 1993 she moved to Missouri City to be near her daughter and grandchildren. Zach and
Whitney Sadler both have wonderful memories of her cooking, gardening and playing games
with Mamo. Well into her 90’s Naomi was still gardening, watching the Food Network, making
gourmet food, playing Bananagrams & reading her Bible.
Naomi was an active member of South Main Baptist Church, First Baptist Church Houston
where she was involved with starting and leading Living Hope (a ministry for substance
abusers and their families). She also was part of the Ruth Class at Sugar Creek Baptist Church
and sang in the Silvertones Senior Choir.
Naomi was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, parents, Sam and Minnie, her
brothers, Verlin, Charles and Chester, Sister-in-Law Gloria, and her step-son Chuck. She is
survived by her daughter, Stacey, her step-daughter Linda. Her grandchildren, Zach and wife Alicia, Whitney, Jason, JD & Justin Armstrong.
