

Cleo was born on Jan. 13, 1925, in Vernon, Texas. He was the youngest of nine siblings. He began working for Conoco in Wichita Falls, Texas, in 1944, moving to Sulphur in 1961. He retired from Conoco after 36 years of service. He was an active member and deacon at First Baptist Church of Maplewood, recently being named Deacon Emeritus. One of his many accomplishments was helping to start a ministry at the Holly Hill Nursing Home. Many people have come to know Christ through the witness and influence of Cleo Haney.
Because of his desire to give back to his community and his love for people, he was also active with the Sulphur Rotary Club, the Sulphur Lodge, the Habibi Temple, the Scottish Rite and the West Calcasieu Chamber of Commerce. He also served as president of the Brimstone Historical Society for three years and as vice president for two years.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Louise Haney; three daughters, Ann Couvillion and husband John of Baton Rouge, Linda Guidry and husband Connie Mack of Lake Charles, and Patricia Blailock and husband Rev. Gene A. Blailock Jr. of Elkton, Md.; his brother, Sanford Haney of Wichita Falls, Texas; five grandchildren, Kaylee Couvillion, Stephen Couvillion, Mack Guidry and wife Katie, Jeanette Renteria and husband Michael, and Matt Blailock and wife Melinda; as well as seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, William Oscar Haney and India Cole Haney; and seven siblings, Darwin, Douglas, Ernest, Robert and Keith Haney, Ruby Reed and Indiaola Frank.
His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, in Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. The Revs. Gene Blailock Jr. and Charley Watson will officiate. Burial will be in Mimosa Pines Cemetery South in Carlyss. Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. Friday and from 1 p.m. until the time of service Saturday in the funeral home.
Investing in the lives of his children and grandchildren left a legacy of faith resulting in every one of them knowing Jesus Christ as their Savior. Cleo was beloved by his family, respected by his community and lived a life that truly mattered. “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.”
