Don was born September 17, 1932 to Lloyd and Myrtle (Carlson) Mickle in Boone, Iowa. On his 17th birthday, Don joined the Army. After basic training in Ft. Riley, KS, he was sent to Japan and then to
Korea. After serving on the front lines in Korea for a year, he was stationed in Ft. Hood, Texas, serving until his honorable discharge on October 16, 1952. During this time he received his GED, Occupational Medal (Japan), UN Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Presidential Citation ROK, Korean Service Medal with 1 Bronze and 1 Silver Star, and National Defense Service Medal.
Don married Lelia Davidson on April 10, 1954 in Boone, Iowa. In 1960, he joined the Prairie Village, KS, Police Department where he served for 20 years. Following this, he worked at the Kansas City Country Club in Mission Hills, KS, until his retirement at age 70. Don and Lelia moved to Washington State in May, 2010. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, William and James.
Don is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lelia, children, David (Kimberly) of Lee’s Summit, MO, Anita (Phillip) Smith of Puyallup, WA, Valerie Sturgis of Cheyenne, WY, John (Michelle) of Richmond, IL, brother, Larry (Dorleen) of Camdenton, MO, 8 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
