My big brother, I loved him but we fought all the time.  He was almost seven years older then me and bigger and stronger then me,  We had to share a bed together growing up, that's where we fought;  over covers.  I went to bed first to get the covers, I would roll up in them.  He would come in and steal them away, usually knocking me out bed.

One night after a date with Lyn he rolled over and kiss me, he was dreaming.  I told Mom and Dad in the morning what he did.  We all had a good laugh at his expense that day.

I remember him coming home to watch me play football my senior year.   I was going to try to impress him.  I was running up the side line and a guy was coming up to tackle me, we met helmet to helmet,  right in front of my brother.
He was in disbelief we both got up from that one.  
I also remember that Clay Center hadn't beat Harvard sense my brother was a senior, seven years earlier.  We won 32 to 6 that year.   The best part about beating Harvard was going to church on Sunday in Harvard,  rubbing their noses in it.

I was in my brother's wedding, but was so young (13 or 14)
don't remember what for.  I do remember he was my best Man at my wedding.  After my wife passed out (fainted) he brought a a glass of water for her and after the mass he help clean a groom's man after he passed out, outside in a mud puddle.  It was a hot Dec. 22 in Nebraska.

He really was the best man, best brother, and best friend a little brother could ever have.  He set the bar pretty high in scouting and in life, I did look up to Him and loved  Him

I also remember the time Joe took me up the hill to pick-up my prescription and it turned out to be a 7 to 8 hour ride!  I could not get Joe to take me back to Sumner.  He just smiled and kept on driving.  He loved to drive around!  It also amazed me how well he knew he way around!

One thing that sticks out in my mind about my big brother Joe is that in all our phones calls...he always ended them with "I Love You".  I love you Joe RIP

Lynn and family, Mary Par, Jane Ann, & Mike:  Linda and I are deeply saddened by Joe's passing. He was a high school senior when I was a freshman. I remember him as a very thoughtful individual as evidenced by the following.  I was injured in the third football game of season and required surgery.  Joe and Steve Yost were the only team members to come out to the farm to visit and check on how I was doing.  A senior coming out to wish a freshman well and check on my well-being.  Obviously, I have never forgotten that gesture.  A loss of a sibling leaves a big void.  With FAITH in our LORD, today's sorrow will become tomorrow's pleasant memories. May God Bless YOU All.

One thing I never properly thanked Joe and Lyn for was attending Katie's college graduation.  It was a very long one day trip for them that I very much appreciated.  But the road trip from WA to ABQ was the funniest story- hope someone wrote it down.  Love you Joe RIP.

More high school memories of Joe include his playing the tuba in the band, center on the football team and being known as the "fainting altar boy".  Mom always said it was from the heat and the incense. . . .hmmmm.  Later in college days Joe bought a red corvette and I remember he and Lyn driving by the swimming pool on Sunday afternoons on their way to Pre-marriage counseling.  And all the excitement by Mom and Dad when each of the kids was born--of course Shann was the first  and so loved. (cont)

Joe was my big brother so of course as we were growing up (and always) I idolized him.  I have wonderful memories of growing up together in Clay Center, NE.  Joe and friends may have made the first "zip line" as there was a pulley and rope contraption rigged from tree to tree in our yard.  Joe had a paper route while in grade school and sometimes during winter snow storms Dad would take Joe on his paper route in the truck Dad used to deliver furniture.  Joe would ride on the running board and toss the papers or jump off and run up to a porch and then jump back on the running board. While the truck was still moving! And of course there is a great memory of "sledding"--being pulled behind the car as hills were sparse. (to be cont)
