This is the season to remember. Barbara Vickerman was a friend to my wife and me for many years. Now my wife, also a Barbara, is a memory too.  This is less a condolence than a celebration of them both, and a thankfulness for what they contributed to the lives of all of us. 

Our friendship with Barb goes back nearly 60 years.  Stu first met Rod and Barb as members of a youth group he led.  Stu and his wife Barbara were adult friends with them too.  Barbara is now in the final stages of Alzheimer's disease.  Nevertheless, when Stu mentions Barb's name she breaks into a radiant smile.  That's because, as a new bride moving to Arizona with Stu from her native state of Texas, she had difficulty adjusting to a new culture.  Barb took Barbara under her wing and became a close friend and confidant.  And Barbara loved her for it!  She was very dear to both of us.

We don't choose our siblings, it's the luck of the draw, in which I was a big winner.  Barb was as loving, supportive, and generous a sister as I could possibly imagine, and I so loved her in return.

I'm so thankful to have had Barb on Earth with me for 75 years, but she was a year and a half younger than I, and it's so very hard to accept that she's gone so soon.  My heart aches especially for her wonderful children and grandchildren, who should have had her in their lives much longer.

In the nearly three weeks since Barb's passing, I've had numerous urges to call her on the phone, which then instantaneously dissolved into painful reality.  Oh, what I would give to hear her warm voice 'at the other end of the line,' in another of our wonderful conversations.

Barb had an amazingly vivid memory, a faculty which I shared with her.  We often talked about our experiences together over our lifetimes, as if each had happened the day before.  I will miss her terribly, but those wonderful memories will give me comfort, for as long as I live.

You always had the nicest things to say about everyone. In over 58 years of knowing you, you were  a personal model for all. Thanks for marrying a relative of mine and letting us get to know and cherish you forever. MG.

Barb will be missed by her children: Adrianne Rae Sloat (Ed); Clinton Robert Gunnison (Mary); Mark Alan Vickerman; 5 grandchildren; brother Rod Moyer (Diane); and many extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
