Darryl Joseph Buckley was born Sept. 23, 1949, to Harold Buckley and Elaine (Heller) Buckley. He was raised on farms in the Portsmouth and Panama, Iowa area, and attended Catholic schools. He was a member of the 1967 graduation class of Panama-Portsmouth St. Mary’s High School, and later graduated from Nettleton Business College in Omaha.
He served in the U.S. Navy, and was discharged in March 1971. He met Cathy Ziska, later that year, and they were united in marriage May 26, 1973, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Omaha. They would become parents of two daughters: Staci, born in 1975; and Sara, born in 1978.
In 1975, he accepted a dispatcher’s position with Ruan Transportation Company in Omaha. He was transferred by Ruan a year later to manage its terminal in Sioux City, Iowa, and in October 1979 accepted a position with Ruan’s operations in Cheyenne, Wyoming, which would become the Buckley family’s home for over 40 years. In December 1983, he was named maintenance supervisor for Pinewood Village Apartments, a Cheyenne apartment complex. He retired from Pinewood Village in April 2016 after a career of more than 32 years in the building maintenance industry.
Darryl will be remembered for inheriting his father’s mechanical aptitude, as well as his dad’s skills as a gifted musician. Darryl was a guitarist and vocalist for several rock ‘n’ roll bands in Iowa and country/western bands in Iowa and Cheyenne. He enjoyed a 50-year career in the music industry before retiring in 2016. He and his wife, Cathy, also volunteered approximately 15 years as active music leaders for their church.
Darryl passed away Dec. 25, 2021, at his home in Peoria, Arizona, where he and his wife enjoyed recent winter seasons.
Survivors include his wife, Cathy; daughter Staci and her husband, Chris White, of Phoenix, AZ.; daughter Sara, of Glendale, AZ and her two children, daughter, Jaiya Buckley, and son, Rashaud Hollen; two brothers, Dennis of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Larry of Omaha, Nebraska; and numerous in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews.
