

Herbert Lee Philips, 86, of Sun City passed away January 20, 2022. Herb was born October 5, 1935 in Independence, Missouri, to Earl Leonidas and Frances (Lamb) Philips. He was the youngest of three sons. The family moved from Missouri to Phoenix, Arizona, in 1937. Herb served in the United States Air Force from 1956 through 1977. During his service, he was a Radar Navigator for the B-52 bomber and the Base Chief of Services. He retired with the rank of Major.
Upon retirement, Herb moved back to Phoenix to care for his aging parents. He was focused on improving his skills at both golf and bowling, and enjoyed playing the recorder in a local community group. A talented pianist, he was always happy to practice at home or play for others, and welcomed the opportunity to play the harpsicord at his niece, Carol’s, wedding in 1983.
Herb was predeceased by his oldest brother, Charles Earl Philips, and second oldest brother, Nicholas Roy Philips. Herb is survived by his sister-in-law, Kay (Bulkley) Philips of Palo Alto and his nieces Carol Cumming (Bruce Cumming) of Reno, Nevada, and Susie Dorn (Charles Dorn) of Brunswick, Maine. At Royal Oaks where he lived for the past ten years, he was a devoted companion to Marge Pappas until she passed in 2019.
