Leland Wayne Horton

Leland Wayne Horton was born June 16, 1917 to Henry and Nellie Horton in Maryville, Missouri. Leland was raised on a farm with his two brothers, Myron and Gerald, and sister Marjorie. Upon graduating from Ravenwood High School in 1935, Leland left the farm with the price of a cow ($62) in his pocket to begin his life anew in St Joseph, Missouri. While attending Platt Guard Business School, Leland was hired by Armour Meat Packing Company, which began his lifelong career in finance. On December 25, 1938, Leland married Virginia Bessie Meyer, and they shared 72 years of marriage before Virginia's death in 2011. They had two daughters, Patricia Kay and Marcia Diane, and made their first family home in St. Joseph, Missouri. In 1953, Armour transferred Leland to Chicago. Leland and family moved to the suburb of Park Forest, Illinois, located 30 miles south of Chicago, and spent the next 18 years enjoying the activities of this unique new community. In 1971, Armour Home Office moved Leland to Phoenix. Leland and Virginia happily moved to Phoenix and chose to make their home in Sun City, Arizona. In 1980, Leland retired from Armour as the Vice President and Controller of Armour Greyhound. During the next 36 years, Leland enjoyed his retirement in many ways from golfing to serving nine years on the Sun City Posse. He loved playing cards, square dancing, traveling, providing advice and maintenance of finances for several Sun City ladies, and most of all spending time with his grandchildren. His wonderful sense of humor prevailed through everything he did, and the mischievous glint in his eye and wiggle in his nose made everyone smile.

Leland is survived by his two daughters: Pat Lee and husband Bob of Kansas City, Missouri, Marcia Nadolny and husband Rick of Scottsdale, Arizona; four grandchildren: Colleen Stormer and husband John of Piedmont, California, Cindy Cook of Kansas City, Missouri, Brad Nadolny and wife Katie of Warrensburg, Missouri, and Jeff Nadolny of Surprise, Arizona; four great-grandchildren: Benjamin, Clara and Kathryn Stormer of Piedmont, California, and Alissa Nadolny of Peoria, Arizona; and very special nephews and nieces and extended family.
