Marie Marchuk was born in December, 1928 in New York City to parents, Paul and Anna. She was the fourth of six children with three brothers (Willie, Pete and Mike) and two sisters (Helen and Joan). Marie’s childhood was a happy one, but the family was relatively poor. At the age of 15 Marie quit school after her mom passed away to help support her family. In 1956 she met the love of her life, Fred, and they married in May, 1957. Always a positive, upbeat person, Marie didn’t believe in having a bad day. She embraced everyone and easily made friends wherever she went. Her out-going personality and sense of humor was infectious. Throughout her lifetime, Marie was a loyal friend, loving wife and devoted mother who insisted that everyone around her have fun and eat!
Although she is from Russian and Austrian heritage, Marie adopted the Italian culture whether they were ready for her or not. She loved cooking and on Sunday afternoons the house would be filled with aromas of the Italian recipes she learned to cook from her mother-in-law.
Although New Yorkers through and through, and while it raised eyebrows, Marie and Fred sold almost everything they had, packed up their gold Cadillac and moved to Arizona in 1973. With a short stint in Modesto, California they ultimately settled in Sun City in 1994, a place they both loved and enjoyed together. Marie moved to Sun Lakes in recent years to, as she put it, “be closer to my kids and give them some grief.”
Marie had many talents including crochet, knitting, and arts & crafts. A part time worker over the years, Marie loved volunteer work and participating in social and activity clubs. She loved to play cards or board games, often organizing gatherings to enjoy a night of games or enjoyable conversation with lots of laughing. Joke telling was one of her favorite things, often laughing uproariously herself.
Marie and Fred had fun decorating their homes wherever they lived, making it a happy place for friends and family to enjoy. Marie’s greatest joy was her family. Her children include her son, Cliff and daughter-in-law, Deidre and their three sons, Kendall, Donovan and Bradley; her daughter, Audrey and son-in-law, Todd and their daughters, Brianna and Kara. She was extremely happy when she became a great-grandmother to Kara’s daughter, Kaydence and she will be looking on with another bolt of joy as Brianna and her husband Joseph welcome their daughter, Abigail Marie Wheaton this November.
Marie touched the lives of many during her lifetime, but as she eloquently put it, “I’ve had a good run,” and she is happy to join “Freddie” in peaceful rest at Sunland Memorial Park in Sun City
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. with a 9:15 a.m. Rosary on Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at St. Steven Catholic Church, 24827 S. Dobson Rd, Sun Lakes, AZ 85248. Private burial at Sunland Memorial Park will be at a later date.
