He was born on February 2, 1940, in Oak Park, Illinois, to Robert and Kathryn (Petrakes) Klauer, who preceded him in death. He attended Catholic schools and graduated from St. Patrick's High School in Chicago.
Robert 's work career began as a paper boy in junior high and helping at his father's gas station, and later included a variety of many jobs in Illinois and Indiana: steel mill foreman, automotive engineer, trucking business owner-operator, restaurant owner. In 1981, Robert relocated to Phoenix to be near his parents and brother Richard. Shortly after arriving in Arizona he met Virginia and they were married for 27 years. He earned a BS in Business from Calumet College in Illinois and an MA in Education from Northern Arizona University. Robert taught for 21 years in the Phoenix Union High School District, and remained in contact with many of his students who shared their career successes with him. Besides being an industrious employee, he did more than his share of volunteer work and public service over the years.
Robert is survived by his wife, Virginia; 2 children (Marilynne Schultz and Ronald Klauer); brother and sister-in-law (Richard and Patricia Klauer); 2 stepchildren (Nonie Bernard and Perry Alexander); 7 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and 3 nephews.
A Memorial Service for Robert will be held Saturday, August 4, 2:00 PM, at the Congregational Church of Sun City, 18401 N. 99th Avenue, Sun City, AZ 85373. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the church or Hospice of the Valley (www.hov.org) or an organization of your choice.
